The Trojans collected a 3-0 win over crosstown rival UCLA to reach 20 wins for the first time since 2022

LOS ANGELES – The No. 5-ranked USC men's volleyball team (20-6, 8-4 MPSF) collected a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) of crosstown rival No. 2 UCLA (20-5, 10-2) on Senior Night at Galen Center on Saturday, April 19. The victory ends a 10-match winning streak by the Bruins in the head-to-head series and cements the Trojans as the second-place team in the MPSF standings.

KEY PLAYERS

Gr. MB Guy Genis had six kills (1e, 9att) and hit .556 to go with a solo block and a pair of aces for 11.0 points.
Jr. OH Dillon Klein led the Trojan attack with nine kills (4e, 18att, .278) and had one dig and a solo block for 10.0 points.
So. S Caleb Blanchette dished out 29 assists and had two digs and a kill to set the Trojans to their 19th match over .300 hitting and their 10th over .400 (.426, 35k, 9e, 61att).
Redshirt Sr. OPP Jack Deuchar had 12.0 points scored on eight kills (0e, 13att) with .615 hitting, three service aces, and two blocks. Deuchar also had four digs.
Fr. OH Sterling Foley registered six kills with a career-best six blocks (three solo) and had three digs and an ace.
Fr. MB Parker Tomkinson scored five kills (1e, 6att, .667) to go with three blocks and a dig.
For the Bruins, Zach Rama led with 18 kills (4e, 28att) on .500 hitting. Cooper Robinson added nine kills and had five digs. Sean Kelly scored five kills. Andrew Rowan put up 34 assists and had two service aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set one was tied 12 times, but a pair of Bruin errors broke the final tie and put USC up for good. The Trojans held off a pair of late UCLA pushes to complete a 25-22 win. USC hit .389 in the opening frame and was led by Deuchar's three kills and had 11 as a team (4e, 18at). Trojans were credited with 5.5 blocks to help hold UCLA to a .143 attack rate with 13 kills (9e) on 28 swings. Rama led the Bruin attack with five kills in the first set.
Klein registered six of his kills to power the Trojans to a 25-22 win in the second set. The USC attack hit .400 (12k, 2e) on 25 attempts and got two kills apiece from Genis and Foley. The Trojans put up 3.5 more blocks, but Rama had seven kills and Robinson added five to help the Bruins hit .385 (13k, 3e, 26att). The Trojans led by as many as four at 11-7, but the Bruins forced a ninth tie at 21-all before Klein put away an overpassed ball and Foley collected a solo block to put USC ahead for good. Foley came through with a crosscourt terminator to end the set.
Deuchar poured in four kills and Genis had three to push the Trojans to a third 25-22 win for the sweep. Deuchar also had three digs to lead the USC defense. The Trojans totaled 12 kills (3e) on 18 swings to hit .500 and got the job done from the service line with five aces. UCLA had 14 kills (2e, 23att) and hit .522. Tied at 11-all, Genis served an ace and followed with a kill to put the Trojans in front one last time. The Bruins fought back to close within a single point at 20-19, but a Deuchar kill gave USC match point, 24-21. UCLA saved one before Tomkinson put the final kill to the floor for the win.

UP NEXT

The Trojans await seeding in the MPSF tournament set for next week (April 22-26) at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif. Because the league's members do not play a balanced schedule, coaches will vote on seeding, which will be finalized and announced on Sunday (April 20).

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 47-108 all-time against UCLA and snapped a 10-match losing streak to the Bruins.
The Trojans hit better than .300 for the 19th time this season and hit better than .400 for the 10th time (.426).
