USC Men's Volleyball Blocks Out Stanford to Move Into MPSF Championship Match

Jack Deuchar had 17 and Dillon Klein had 16 kills to lead the Trojans to a four-set win over the Cardinal
MALIBU, Calif. – The second-seeded No. 5-ranked USC men's volleyball team (21-6) collected a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19) over No. 6 seed 13th-ranked Stanford (13-15) in the semifinals of the MPSF Championship at Firestone Fieldhouse on Friday, April 25. The win moves the Trojans into the MSPF title where they will face fourth-seed No. 8 Pepperdine (19-9) in a rematch of the 2019 championship match that was also played in Firestone.

- Redshirt Sr. OPP Jack Deuchar scored 19.5 points with 17 kills (4e, 31att) and .419 hitting to go with four blocks (one solo).
- Jr. OH Dillon Klein led all scorers with 22.5 points registered on 16 kills (4e, 30att, .400) with seven blocks (two solo) and a pair of service aces. It was his 19th match in double-digit kills (60th career).
- So. S Caleb Blanchette dished out 34 assists and had six digs and a block.
- Gr. MB Guy Genis logged six bocks (two solo) and added two kills and had five assists.
- Fr. MB Parker Tomkinson racked up seven blocks (two solo) including the final block of the match and had seven kills (2e, 11att) to hit .455 and finished with 11.5 points.
- For the Cardinal, Moses Wagner led with 16 kills while Theo Snoey scored 13. Reed Wainwright scored nine kills. Evan Porter dug up seven balls and Theoren Brouillette put up 37 assists.
- The Trojans tied a season-high with 17.0 blocks and reached double-digit blocks for the 15th time this season. USC out-blocked Stanford, 17.0 to 10.0, and out-dug the Cardinal, 26-22.
- Both teams led by as many as three points in the opening frame, but the Cardinal used a 3-0 run to break the seventh tie and claimed a 23-22 lead. USC tied it once more before Stanford closed out a 25-23 win on a service ace by Snoey. Wagner powered a Cardinal offense that hit .200 (14k, 7e, 35att) with eight kills. Both teams put up five blocks in set one, but USC got five kills from Klein and just three apiece from Foley and Deuchar to hit .167 (11k, 7e) on 24 attempts.
- The second set was tied 17 times before the Trojans evened the match with a 25-23 win behind .480 hitting and four blocks. Klein had six kills in set two and Deuchar added four. USC served a pair of aces but needed every point to hold off a Stanford attack that hit .360 with 12 kills (3e) on just 25 swings.
- The Trojans racked up six more blocks in the third set to hold the Cardinal to a .056 attack (12k, 10e) on 36 swings and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a hard-fought 25-22 win. The Trojans never trailed and were only tied once—at 14-all—as Deuchar collected six kills to pace the USC attack. The Trojans totaled 11 kills (5e) on 29 swings to hit .207 in the third.
- Despite 12 more ties in the fourth set, USC broke away and finished off the Cardinal with a 25-19 win. Tomkinson had four of his kills in set four and had one of two solo blocks—Klein the other—to lift the Trojans to a .348 hitting percentage (12k, 4e) on 23 attacks. Stanford had nine kills—three from Snoey—and hit .208 (4e, 24att). Deuchar also had four kills in the fourth and Klein added three more to his tally.
- The Trojans meet fourth-seeded and No. 8-ranked tournament host Pepperdine (19-9) in the championship match at Firestone Field set for a 7:30 p.m. PT first serve on Saturday (April 26). The match will be shown live on Big Ten Network.
- USC improved to 73-41 all-time against Stanford and snapped a five-match losing streak to the Cardinal.
- The Trojans had double-digit blocks for the 15th time this season and tied a season-high 17.0 blocks (at CSUN Jan. 22).
- USC will play in its first MPSF championship match since 2019 and seeks its first conference tournament title since 2009.
- The Trojans improved to 17-20 all-time in MPSF tournament matches and to 32-35 in conference and regional playoffs.
