The Trojans dominated the match, as they took down Purdue 6-1 in the Big Ten season opener
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis earned their first-ever Big Ten conference victory after rolling past the Purdue Boilermakers 6-1 on Saturday, Mar. 8, at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC was dominant straight out of the gate, winning 6-2 on the first and second doubles courts to take the match's first point. The clinching doubles point victory came from junior Oscar Weightman and sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko, on court No. 1.
The momentum earned from doubles carried over, as senior Karl Lee had a clean set sweep in the first set before eventually grabbing the match's second point with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on court five. Senior No. 28 Peter Makk continues his impressive run on court one, winning 6-2, 6-3 to put USC on the brink of victory before Iakubenko sealed the deal in straight sets on court four, taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
With the match already decided, the two teams played out the rest of the courts. Freshman No. 112 Nathan Trouve battled back after dropping his first set to take a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win on court two. The lone point for the Boilermakers came on court No. 6. Finally, freshman Matteo Morazzi extended his win streak to five straight matches with a three-set victory on court four, improving to 7-1 on the season.
With their first conference win under their belt, the Trojans will quickly turn their attention to Indiana, who they will face Sunday afternoon. The first swing will occur at noon at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
