LOS ANGELES – After tossing a seven-inning gem against No. 14 Vanderbilt on Saturday, USC's Caden Aoki was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday (March 3).
Aoki did not allow an earned run in his 7.0 innings of work on Saturday, guiding USC to a 3-1 victory over the commodores. It is the first Big Ten pitcher of the Week award won by a Trojan this season and comes on the heels of the Trojans' Grant Govel being named the conference's Freshman of the Week last Monday.
Aoki picked up hist first victory of the season on Saturday, striking out a career high 10 batters, while walking just one and scattering four hits. He gave up just one unearned run in the contest.
Two of the four hits Aoki allowed came in the fifth inning as Vanderbilt loaded the bases with one out, but Aoki struck out the next two batters to keep the Commodores off the board. The Trojan righty allowed just one baserunner through the first four innings of play, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced while USC built up a 2-0 lead.
The USC senior lowered his season ERA by nearly two full runs with the start, improving to a 2.70 ERA on the year.
The Trojans are 9-2 to start the season and have four games against ranked opponents coming up this week, with No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and No. 10 Oregon on the docket. USC will host UCSB on Tuesday at LMU and then welcomes Oregon to Great Park in Irvine for a three-game series to open Big Ten play starting on Friday.
