March 28, 2025 | Women's Tennis
Trojans fall 4-3 to Penn State in Happy Valley.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 14 USC women's tennis struggled to complete the comeback against Penn State on Friday afternoon in Happy Valley, falling 4-3 to the Nittany Lions.
With the loss, USC drops to 3-2 in conference play.
For just the second time this season, the Women of Troy lost the doubles point, getting a win on center court before dropping matches on courts two and three. Working with a one-point deficit, USC would have need four singles wins to secure the team victory.
Shortly after singles began, the match was moved inside to the Indoor Tennis Center due to inclement weather.
Penn State won the first two singles matches, picking up wins on courts one and four. USC's first point of the day came from a win on court two as No. 69 Emma Charney beat Maiko Uchijima 7-5, 6-4. USC continued to claw back as Immi Haddad put the second point on the board for the Trojans with a victory over Jelena Vico 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Freshman Jana Hossam put Trojans in a position to complete the comeback as she tied it up with a win on court five over Jordina Cegarra (6-4, 6-7, 6-2). The remaining match on court six went the distance, with Maria Ciubotaru of Penn State ultimately emerging victorious over Maia Sung 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to solidify the win for the Nittany Lions.
USC is back in action on Sunday with a dual against No. 10 Ohio State at 9 a.m. PT in Columbus, Ohio.
