Broderick Breaks 58-Year-Old USC Discus Throw Record In Win At Trojan Invitational

Women’s discus throwers sweep top three places during first day of Trojan Invitational

Racquil Broderick won the men's discus throw competition with a school-record toss and the USC women's discus throwers swept the top three places during the first day of the 2025 Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational being held at the Colich Throws Center in Wilmington, Calif. today (March 21).

With the first throw of the season, sophomore Racquil Broderick set the USC school discus throw record with a mark of 207-0 (63.09m) and won the competition. He broke the longest-standing USC men's track and field record of 206-0 (62.78m) which was set by Gary Carlsen on June 4, 1967. Carlsen, who was on hand at the meet, posed with Broderick after the competition and gave him a gift of a Greek thrower trophy. Broderick placed second at the NCAA Championships in the discus throw last season as a freshman. Freshman Shaiquan Dunn placed fourth today with a mark of 171-8 (52.32m).
The Trojan women's discus throwers captured the top three positions with sophomore Reese Garland winning by an inch with a throw of 174-0 (53.05m). Freshman Ashley Erasmus placed second with a mark of 173-11 (53.01m) which moved her into eighth place on USC's all-time list, a list which includes Garland as fifth all-time with her best throw last season of 178-2. Junior transfer Karyssa Owens placed third with a PR of 170-7 (51.02m) to move into 10^th place on USC's all-time discus throw list.
Owens also had a big PR in the women's hammer throw, finishing fifth with a personal-best mark of 199-1 (60.68m). She had three throws better than her previous career-best throw of 183-1 (55.80m) in placing second at the 2024 Big West Championships while competing for UC Riverside. Sophomore Jenna Gallaway had a best throw of 187-1 (57.03m) to place seventh today.
Freshman Kaden Garland had a personal-best men's hammer throw of 184-6 (56.24m) to place sixth.

USC will be hosting the remainder of the 2025 Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational at Allyson Felix Field at Loker Stadium beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow (March 22). Admission is free to USC students and $10 for all other tickets.
