USC Men’s Tennis Splits Sunday Afternoon Doubleheader

Senior Peter Makk picked up a massive win against No. 4 Carl Emil Overbeck, as freshman Matteo Morazzi went 4-0 combined in doubles and singles
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis wrapped up its three-game weekend homestand by splitting their doubleheader by defeating UNLV and dropping its match to California on Sunday, February 2, at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Trojans started the day facing off against a familiar opponent, the California Golden Bears. USC picked up the match's first point following a pair of doubles victories on courts one and three. Graduate Tristan Bradley and senior Peter Makk picked up their first-ranked victory against No. 80 Wright/Chang, while freshmen Matteo Morazzi and Nathan Trouve impressed in their court three victory.
Despite a one-point advantage, singles play proved difficult as Cal fielded a line-up with five ranked players. The first two courts split, with Trouve falling on court two and Morazzi picking up a win on court six to make the score 2-1, Trojans advantage before junior Oscar Weightman lost on court three and tied the match.
On center court, Makk continued his hot streak from the last few matches. His talent was on full display as he stormed past No. 4 Carl Emil Overbeck in straight sets, picking up his second-ranked win of the spring and first career win against a top-five opponent. However, even Makk's victory was not enough to secure the match, as the Golden Bears picked up wins on courts four and five to win 4-3.
An hour later, the Trojans returned to the court, ready to take on the UNLV Rebels. Once again, USC succeeded in doubles play, with Morazzi and Trouve winning, 6-0, on center court and Sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko and freshman Connor Church following on court three with a 6-4 victory.
USC's momentum carried into singles play. Senior Karl Lee led the way on court two, jumping to a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory to put the Trojans up two. Despite a stumble on court four from Church, the Trojans rolled the Rebels, with Bradley (court six) and Morazzi (court three) clinching the win. Morazzi finished the day 4-0 across singles and doubles play.
USC will face an extended break before traveling to Pepperdine for its next match on Friday, February 14.
