The Trojans earned a win over CSUN and battled UC Irvine in a strong day of fall play
LOS ANGELES – The USC men's volleyball team hosted UCLA, UC Irvine, and CSUN for the USC Fall Invitational and finished the day 1-1 at the Trojans' first action of the fall season at Galen Center Pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Trojans opened the morning against CSUN. After dropping a close opening set, USC responded with a dominant performance in the second to swing the momentum. The third was tightly contested, but the Trojans edged out the Matadors before closing the match convincingly in the fourth to claim the win, 21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-19.
On the adjacent court, UC Irvine controlled the morning's other opening match and swept UCLA, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.
In the mid-morning match, UCLA and CSUN squared off and the Bruins claimed the first two sets before CSUN rallied to take the third. UCLA responded in the fourth to seal the win, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19.
In the day's final match, UC Irvine and USC battled through two tight sets but came up short. The Trojans responded with a strong third-set win and showed resilience and steady offensive rhythm. The Anteaters regained control in the fourth to secure the match, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 25-16.
USC returns to action later this month and will host Vanguard and UC San Diego in a second fall tournament on Saturday (Nov. 15) at the Galen Center Pavilion.
Last year, the Trojans went 21-7 in the regular season, finished second in the MPSF standings (8-4), and were awarded the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. There, USC finished as runner-up to Pepperdine, which hosted the championship in Malibu, Calif. USC opened the year with a nine-match win streak for its best start to a season since 1991 (28-0) and won 10 matches in a row (Feb. 26-April 3) for the program's longest win streak since 2012 (18 in a row). It was the second 20-win season for head coach Jeff Nygaard and the 20th 20-win season in program history. The Trojans spent 13 weeks ranked in the top five and reached as high as No. 3 for the team's highest ranking since it was also No. 3 in 2015.
