September 23, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
The two Trojans collect the program’s first ever Big Ten volleyball weekly awards
ROSEMONT, Ill. – USC women's volleyball senior Mia Tuaniga (Long Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) was named the Big Ten Setter of the Week and outside hitter Jadyn Livings (Dallas, Texas/Prestonwood Christian Academy) was chosen for the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award the Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 23.
Â
The awards are a first for USC players as members of the Big Ten Conference. While it is the first-career award of any kind for Livings, it is the first for Tuaniga since she was chosen for Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors in 2021.
Â
Tuaniga produced her third and fourth double-doubles of the season (31st and 32nd of her career) in three matches at the Trojans/Lions Invitational. She led USC to three wins and the tournament title and was named to the all-tournament team. Against Loyola Marymount, she had 48 assists and 10 digs to go with three kills and six blocks. In a win over UNLV, Tuaniga turned in 39 assists and 14 digs with four kills, two blocks, and three service aces. She topped the week off with a 35 assist and eight dig performance in a win over UC San Diego where she had four service aces, four kills, and four blocks. It was Tuaniga's 16th and 17th career matches with three service aces or more.
Livings—a co-award winner with Izzy Starck of Penn State—continued this week where she left off the last one and strung together her fourth straight match with double-digit kills and double-digit points. She had 16 kills and eight digs with three blocks and a service ace for a career-high 19.0 points against LMU. One night later, Livings had a career-high 18 kills on 47 attacks and added two digs and a block. In the win over UC San Diego, Livings totaled 13 kills and 11 digs for her first-career double-double and paired that with four blocks and two assists.
Â
The Trojans went 8-2 in nonconference matches and begin the Big Ten schedule on a five-match win streak. USC will open league play against Ohio State (7-3) at home on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. and then head to Lincoln, Neb., for a match against Nebraska on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 6:30 p.m. CT. Both matches will be shown live on Big Ten Network.Â
