USC Women's Soccer Downs Portland, 2-1
August 31, 2024 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND, Ore. – The USC women's soccer team put up another strong performance on the road on Saturday afternoon, taking down Portland 2-1 in a non-conference matchup to stay unbeaten on the year.
The Trojans got a first half goal from Kayla Colbert and then a second half penalty kick from Maile Hayes to take care of business offensively. The win moves USC to 3-0-1 on the season, while Porland falls to 2-2-1.
USC's defense was dominant for most of the afternoon, giving up just a PK in the 85th minute for the lone goal allowed. The Trojans held Portland without a shot in the first half and maintained 62% of the possession.
Colbert linked up with Helena Sampaio and Jaiden Anderson in the 28th minute, scoring a beautiful left-footed strike for her first goal of the season. She is the fifth Trojan to score in USC's first four games.
Hayes, USC's scoring leader coming into the game, extended her team lead with her third goal of the season when she was taken down in the box and converted the PK in the 56th minute. Hayes now has three goals in four games since transferring to USC in the offseason.
