EUGENE, Ore. - The 21-ranked USC lacrosse team (10-3, 4-0 Pac-12) trounced Oregon (7-4, 1-3 Pac-12) 19-8 in the offensive onslaught on Saturday, April 6 in Eugene, Ore.
KEY PLAYERS:
The Women of Troy are back at it next weekend as they head to Stanford at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, April 13 at Maloney Field in Stanford, Calif.
GAME NOTES:
KEY PLAYERS:
- Five Trojans posted hat tricks as graduate student Ella Heaney, senior Shelby Tilton, senior Maggie Brown, junior Maddie Dora and redshirt junior Isabelle Vitale all posted three or more goals. Heaney contributed the most in the winning effort, as she produced five goals, while all the rest of the players had three in the affair. This is Heaney's seventh hat trick this season and 22nd of her career, which ties her for fourth all-time. Tilton now has nine on the season and has 19 for her career. Brown has six for the season, and 15 for her career (tied for 8th); Dora has two this season and has seven for her career. Vitale has her first this season, and now has 15 for her career (tied for 8th). Vitale also added three assists to her total for six total points, while Heaney added one assist to give her six points as well.
- Defensively, senior Claudia Shevitz and redshirt freshman Hannah Barron both had multiple caused turnovers with two each.
- Freshman Anna Regan picked up her 100th career draw control, as she put together ten draw controls for the game.
- Senior Kait Devir picked up the win in the affair, as she relieved freshman Annie Shields after the first quarter. Devir posted three saves and only allowed four goals in 31 minutes of work.
- Compared to the rest of the game, the first quarter was slow and more defensively focused, as both teams only allowed three goals to their counterparts. Right out the gate Oregon opened with two quick goals in less than five minutes. USC would respond as Tilton gave the Women of Troy their first hint of action at 10:34 in the first. The Ducks would respond, but the Women of Troy would even it up at three, before all was said and done in the first.
- Any momentum the Ducks gathered was taken away in the latter part of the second quarter, as the Trojans started to release an offensive onslaught starting at 2:53 in the second quarter. For much of the second it was back-and-forth, but once Heaney earned her hat trick it led to a 5-0 run that lasted until 8:44 in the third quarter. The largest factor of this run was USC's ability to get shots on goal and win in the draw circle. In the second, the Women of Troy picked up seven draw controls, and put ten shots on goal, as they outscored the home team 7-4 in the second.
- While the 5-0 run ended in the third, it didn't matter, as USC absolutely dominated the Oregon defense and once again posted seven goals in a quarter. However, while the offense thrived, the defense contained, as they only allowed the Ducks one goal in the quarter. Oregon was only allowed to get off three shots, and only two shots made it on target, while the Trojans converted eight shots – eight shots on goal – into seven goals.
- In the fourth USC gave itself a ten-goal lead, as Brown earned her hat trick with 10:24 left in the fourth. The rest of the quarter was an opportunity for the Women of Troy to get their backups some playing time, as they would skate by in the fourth and clinch the victory 19-8.
The Women of Troy are back at it next weekend as they head to Stanford at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, April 13 at Maloney Field in Stanford, Calif.
