Trojans snap 28 year losing streak against the Cardinal during final home meet of the season.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 USC women's swimming and diving team picked up another historic win for the second consecutive day, defeating No. 4 Stanford 155.5-142.5 on Saturday, Feb. 3 at home. The Trojans improve to 8-0 to remain undefeated, hand Stanford their first loss of the season and snap a nearly 28 year losing streak against the Cardinal.
USC's last win over Stanford came in 1996, when the Women of Troy won 153-147. 1996 was also the last time USC beat both Stanford and Cal in the same season.
No. 17 Troy would eventually fall to No. 5 Stanford 119.5-175.5. Their record now stands at 2-4 on the season.
For the second consecutive day, the Women of Troy opened the meet with a win in the major win in the 200y medley relay as Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia combined to clock a 1:35.40 and out-touch the Cardinal A-relay.
USC freshman Krzysztof Chmielewski clocked a 8:50.29 to win the 1000y freestyle for the second time in less than 24 hours. The USC rookie beat Stanford's Rex Maurer (8:53.17) by nearly three seconds. Maurer is the son of USC swim head coach Lea Maurer.
Moving into the 100y backstroke, it would be Famous to claim the event in a season-best time of 51.36. A few events later, the senior returned to win the 50y freestyle in 22.16, tying with Stanford's Amy Tang. Delgado was third in 22.33. Famous hit a season-best time in every event she swam this weekend.
Moments later, another tie would happen as USC junior Artem Selin and Stanford's Jonathan Tan would touch the wall at the same time in 19.37.
In the 100y freestyle, freshman Minna Abraham led a 1-2 Trojan finish, touching first in 47.90. Buinaia was shortly behind in 48.21.
Senior Dobler continued where she left off yesterday, claiming both the 100y (58.63) and 200y breaststroke (2:08.70) to contribute a much needed 18 points for the Women of Troy.
USC was also dominant in the diving well, with the Women of Troy sweeping both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter competitions. Nike Agunbiade captured the 1-Meter event (for the second straight day) scoring 267.15 points. On 3-Meter, Agunbiade was first with 299.90 points. The Trojans went 2-3 on both springboards as Grace Lee and Allison Ward helped put the Women of Troy out front heading into the final few events.
The men's diving squad hit their stride against Stanford as well, with Shangfei Wang claiming the 1-Meter event with 352.40 points and Laurent Paradis winning 3-meter with 353.10 points.
The meet was decided once again during the final event of the afternoon, the women's 400y freestyle relay. Buinaia led off in a 48.62 before passing it off to Delgado (48.31) and subsequently Hannah Kuechler (48.44). Trojan freshman Abraham hit the water for the anchor leg more than a second behind Stanford's A-relay but would blast a 46.59 (unofficial) to come from behind and win the race.
USC is back in action on Friday, Feb. 9, as the Trojans take on Crosstown Rival UCLA at 1 p.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
