No. 5 USC Women’s Basketball Tacks Up 10th Win With 88-30 Victory Over Elon
December 15, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Four Trojans scored in double figures while USC’s defense held the Phoenix to just 11 field goals.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 5 USC women's basketball team held visiting Elon to just 30 points — a program record-low scoring total by any USC opponent — as the Trojans tacked up their 10th win of the season. USC's 88-30 victory featured 10 Trojans on the scoresheet in helping to improve USC to 10-1 overall. Elon goes to 4-5 with today's loss at Galen Center.
USC held Elon to just 12 points in the first half — third fewest points scored in a half by a USC opponent in program history — while the Trojans shot 43.8 percent from the floor to lead it 40-12 at halftime. The Phoenix had shot 18.5 percent in those first 20 minutes, and were trailing the Trojans on the board 24-15. By the final buzzer, USC had upped its efforts to close out the game having shot 46.6 percent overall to outpace Elon's final 21.2 percent. USC wrapped up the rebounding game with a 50-30 advantage, and the Trojans scored 36 points off of 25 Phoenix turnovers on the day.
Of USC's four double-digit scorers today, JuJu Watkins led the pack with 26 points on an 11-of-12 effort from the free-throw line. Kiki Iriafen added 18 points for the Trojans, with Kayleigh Heckel tallying 14 and Talia von Oelhoffen at 10. Rayah Marshall led USC on the boards with a season-high 14 rebounds. Elon received a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds from Hannah Dereje.
After two early ties, Talia von Oelhoffen nailed a 3-pointer that set the Trojans off on a scoring surge that featured a steal and score from Kayleigh Heckel and a fast break finish from JuJu Watkins as USC built a 15-4 lead with 3:00 on the clock. Watkins would get a steal soon after, then landed a long-range 3-pointer and converted her free throw to net a 21-6 USC advantage and work her own way into double digits in just over eight minutes of work. USC closed out the first half up 23-6 and then added to it with a hot start out of the gates. Kiki Iriafen scored six straight points as USC's overall scoring rally grew to 16-0 and the score ballooned to 31-6. Clarice Akunwafo and Vivian Iwuchukwu would join the scoresheet as the first half continued to unfurl, with Iwuchukwu following a von Oelhoffen three with a score down low to take the Trojans to a 40-12 lead for halftime.
Von Oelhoffen would work her way into double digits with a jumper that lifted USC ahead 49-19, with Rayah Marshall and Iriafen each connecting from the paint to help the Trojan lead grow to 55-21 by the 5-minute mark of the third. That was just part of what would grow to a 17-0 Trojan run that had the hosts ahead 68-21 entering the final minute of the third. Three straight fast break finishes from Heckel helped charge the Trojans up to a 77-25 lead three minutes into the fourth. Two more Trojans would tally their first points of the day down the stretch, as Aaliyah Gayles drilled a 3-pointer and Rian Forestier topped off the day's action to round out an 88-30 final Trojan victory.
