No. 23 USC Women's Volleyball Walks Down No. 11 Oregon for Five-Set Win

LOS ANGELES – The No. 23-ranked USC women's volleyball team (18-8, 10-6 Big Ten) took down No. 11 Oregon (19-6, 11-5) in five sets (20-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14) at Galen Center on Sunday, Nov. 17. It was the Trojans' fifth five-set win in seven full-length matches this fall and USC's second over a top 15 AVCA opponent.

- Gr. OH Ally Batenhorst led the Trojans with 20.5 points gained on a team-high 18 kills to go with a service ace and two blocks (one solo). She notched her ninth double-double of the season (11th career) with 10 digs and added two assists.
- Sr. S Mia Tuaniga dished out 40 assists to go with nine digs, five blocks, four kills (8att) on .500 hitting, and had two of the Trojans' nine service aces to finish with 8.5 points.
- Redshirt So. OH Adonia Faumuina reached career highs in points (18.0), kills (17), and attacks (45) and added six digs and a pair of blocks. She also received 12 serves without error.
- Redshirt Fr. MB Leah Ford logged 11.5 points for her seventh match in double digits. She had seven kills (2e) on 19 swings and added six blocks (one solo) to go with a service ace.
- Fr. MB Favor Anyanwu scored seven kills (2e, 18att) and hit .278 with four blocks (two solo) for 10.0 points.
- Redshirt So. OPP Madison Pietsch started in place of Fr. Jadyn Livings and finished with five kills, two digs, one block, and had four assists in out-of-system situations.
- Jr. LIB Gala Trubint led the Women of Troy with 15 digs for her 64th-career match in double digits. She also produced 10 assists to log her second-career double-double and had a career-high tying four service aces.
- For the Ducks, Mimi Colyer led all players with 23 kills and had the double-double with 13 digs. Michelle Ohwobete put up 17 kills with 12 digs and served three aces. Onye Ofoegbu had eight kills and 11 blocks. Noemie Glover had 13 kills and seven blocks (one solo). Mackenzie Morris let all players with 24 digs and had seven assists.
- USC had more service aces (9-6) and a slight edge over Oregon in digs (66-65). Despite being out-blocked by the Ducks, 21.0 to 12.0, the Women of Troy recorded their 17th match in double-digit blocks.
- The Trojans got five kills from Batenhorst and four from Faumuina in a 25-20 first-set loss. USC had more kills (13-11) but the Ducks held the Trojans to a .128 hitting rate with 6.5 blocks in the frame. Oregon also won the service game with a 6-3 edge in points from the line. Oregon got five kills from Colyer and three from Ohwobete; and the Ducks hit .233 in the set.
- USC scored an early 3-1 lead in set two, but the Ducks went on a 3-0 and 4-0 runs to claim an 8-4 lead and were never threatened again en route to a 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Trojans got three kills from Ford and two more from Batenhorst, but Oregon put up five more blocks to hold USC to an .033 hitting rate with eight kills on 30 swings.
- The Trojans claimed a 25-22 win in the third to push the match to a fourth set. Faumuina powered the USC offense with six kills in the frame and led the Trojans to a .333 hitting rate with 17 kills on 42 swings. Anyanwu added four kills on eight swings while Batenhorst had three to go with four digs. Oregon had 16 kills on 48 attacks for a .229 hitting rate.
- USC forced set five on a 25-23 win in the fourth. The score was tied three times, but the Trojans never trailed and got six kills from Batenhorst, three from Faumuina, and two each from Tuaniga and Anyanwu to hit .243 with 15 kills on 37 swings. Ohwobete logged six kills for the Ducks who hit .235 (13k, 5e) on 34 attacks.
- The Women of Troy scored the first four points of the fifth, but Oregon responded with a 4-0 run to notch the first of nine ties in the set. Faumuina tagged four more balls for kills while Batenhorst had two and the USC defense posted 3.5 blocks to help hold the Ducks to a .160 attack rate (7k, 3e, 25att).Â
- USC returns to the Midwest next week for matches at Northwestern (5-19, 3-13 Big Ten) and eighth-ranked Purdue (22-5, 13-3). The Trojans take on the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Thursday (Nov. 21) at 7 p.m. CT (5 p.m. PT) in Evanston, Ill. USC then faces the Boilermakers at Holloway Gymnasium on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) in West Lafayette, Ind. Both matches will be shown on Big Ten Plus streams.
- USC improved to 57-21 all-time against Oregon and snapped a three-match losing streak against the Ducks. The Trojans go to 27-11 in home matches with UO. In five-set contests specifically, USC goes to 7-6 all-time against Oregon and snapped a six-match losing streak in five-setters with Oregon (2019-22).
- The Trojans earned their second win over an AVCA ranked opponent (No. 12 Minnesota, Oct. 5).
- The Women of Troy improved to 5-2 in five set matches this season. All-time, USC goes to 157-110 in five-set matches with a 67-41 mark at home. Against Big Ten opponents, the Trojans go to 47-41 all-time.Â
- The Trojans improved to 11-4 in home matches this season and improved to 215-60 all-time at Galen Center.
- USC finished with 12.0 blocks for the Trojans' 17th match in double-digit blocks this season.
