No. 3 USC Men’s Water Polo Gets Defensive In Winning Doubleheader In Westchester
October 11, 2024 | Men's Water Polo
Trojans beat Westcliff 25-7 and LMU 13-3 to improve to 14-2 overall.
WESTCHESTER, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC men's water polo team served up a double dose of defensive stands to drum up two wins in Westchester today, beating Westcliff 25-7 before a 13-3 win over host No. 16 LMU today. USC pinned up its biggest scoring effort of the season and then followed that up with its stingiest defensive effort of the year in back-to-back wins that improve the Trojans to 14-2 overall.
In the first game of the evening, USC built up a 6-0 lead and had seven different scorers on the board by the end of the first frame, leading Westcliff 7-1. Jack Vort issued back-to-back blasts to kick off the second, and USC surged to a 13-2 halftime lead. The Trojan offense stayed the course down the stretch, pinning up six goals in the second, third and fourth periods while amassing a season-high 25 goals. Along the way, Luke Nelson led the pack with a career-high four goals. Ben Mirisch, meanwhile, celebrated his birthday with his first hat trick as a Trojan. Chase Landa also added three for the Trojan cause, which saw 13 different scorers strike in the victory. Goalie Charles Mills went the distance in the cage for USC with 12 saves tallied on the defensive end.
Goalie Bernardo Herzer checked in for the test against the host Lions, giving up a season-low three goals behind a stingy Trojan defense. Herzer also had the last word of the night with an opportunistic goal all his own, having hauled in a save against an LMU 7-on-6 look and then launching just the second goalie-scored goal on record at USC to top off a 13-3 Trojan victory. USC had fought through a defensive battle with the Lions in the first half, coming back from an early 1-0 deficit with three straight goals — from Robert López Duart, Stefan Brankovic and Andrej Grgurevic — to lead it 3-1 by halftime. USC would plug in five goals in each of the next two frames while silencing the Lions in the fourth to lock down the decisive win. The Trojans scored four straight in the third on goals from Max Miller, López Duart, Jack Martin and Zach Bettino to turn a two-goal game into a Trojan-controlled contest. Herzer ended up with 15 saves on the day.
NEXT:
USC has two games on deck at Uytengsu Aquatics Center next week. The Trojans host Princeton on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at 5 p.m. On Saturday (Oct. 19), USC hosts the Crosstown Splashdown in a battle with rival UCLA at 1 p.m. Prior to that game, USC will honor its nine graduating Trojans in a Senior Day ceremony.
