USC’s McKenzie Forbes Earns Spot On Cheryl Miller Award Top 10 List
January 24, 2024 | Women's Basketball
The grad student picks up honors as one of the top small forwards in the nation.
USC women's basketball grad student McKenzie Forbes continues to impress as a Trojan, adding another impressive accolade to her honor roll in today being named as one of 10 candidates for the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award, which is awarded to the top small forward in the nation.
Forbes, who is in her first season at USC as a grad transfer from Harvard, has been a stabilizing force for the No. 11 Trojans this season. She was on the Watch List for the Cheryl Miller Award as announced back in October. Since then, Forbes has stepped up time and again for the Trojans, delivering a new career high with a 36-point outing for a short-handed USC roster against Long Beach State, and earning herself Pac-12 Player of the Week and USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Player of the Week honors that same week. She's currently USC's second leading scorer — behind Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Top 10 list JuJu Watkins — with 13.3 points per game, and she leads the Trojans in 3-pointers made with 31 to date. She's also second on the team in assists with 3.2 per game, and has logged the most minutes on the team with 506. She's scored in double figures in 12 games for the 13-3 Trojans, with a streak of four straight double-digit outings as she and her Trojans return to Galen Center this week for more Pac-12 play.
Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the Cheryl Miller Award, in its seventh year, recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Fans can support their favorite players in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, January 26, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Cheryl Miller Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Award (Point Guard), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Shooting Guard), Katrina McClain Award (Power Forward), and the Lisa Leslie Award (Center), in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
Previous winners of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award are Ashley Joens, Iowa State (2021-23), Satou Sabally, Oregon (2020), Bridget Carleton, Iowa State (2019), and Gabby Williams, Connecticut (2018).
