USC Women's Volleyball Takes Down Toreros to Claim Trojan Invitational Crown

Tournament MVP Skylar Fields put up a career-high 28 kills to power the USC offense in a four-set win over San Diego
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The USC women's volleyball team (4-4) defeated San Diego (3-5) in four sets (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23) to capture the Trojan Invitational title at Galen Center on Sunday, Sept. 10. Senior OH Skylar Fields was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior MB Lindsey Miller and sophomore LIB Gala Trubint.

KEY PLAYERS
- Sr. OH Skylar Fields set a new career high with 28 kills to lead all players and hit .350 (7e) on 60 attempts. She also had 12 digs to post her first double-double of the season (11th of her career).
- Gr. OH Kalyah Williams matched her career high with 13 kills and hit .244 on a season-high 41 swings with seven digs.
- Sr. MB Lindsey Miller added five kills without an error on 16 attacks to hit .312 and led all players with six blocks.
- Jr. setter Mia Tuaniga dished out a season-best 49 assists to go with 14 digs (matching her career high) for her third double-double of the season and the 18th of her career. She also had four kills (10att, .400), three blocks, and an ace.
- So. LIB Gala Trubint racked up 20 digs to go with two service aces and four assists. It marked her 31st-career match in double-digit digs and was her ninth time with 20 digs or more in a match.
- Gr. DS Ellie Snook posted 11 digs with a service ace and an assist.
- For San Diego, Amber Stivrins led the offense with 25 kills (6e) on 70 attacks to hit .271 and had the double-double with 17 digs. Kylie Pries also had a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills but hit .000 with 11 errors on 49 attacks.
- The Trojans out-hit USD, .261 to .181, and matched a season-high with 12 blocks, their third match with double-digit blocks this season. USC picked up 76 digs for its second-highest total in a match this fall.
- The Women of Troy weathered nine ties and six lead changes in the first set to claim a 25-20 win. Fields had seven of her kills in the opening frame and helped USC lead by as many as six points at 23-17. Trubint turned in six of her digs in the set and the Trojans had a pair of aces and a pair of blocks in the win.
- The Toreros turned the tables in set two and led by six twice at 8-2 and 13-7. USC stayed the course and claimed the lead momentarily at 18-17, but San Diego fended off the Trojan attack to get a 26-24 win and evened the match. Both Fields and Stivrins posted seven kills in the second set.
- USC built an 11-3 lead early in the third and led by as many as 10 points at 20-10 before sewing up a 25-19 win to go up, 2-1. Stivrins added another seven kills and Fields turned in six. Williams added five but the Trojans got it done at the net with three blocks and held USD to a .136 hitting percentage to their .333.
- Fields went off for eight more kills in the fourth set and USC locked up a 25-23 win with four more blocks and three service aces. The Trojans hit .303 in the final set and held the Toreros to .237.
- The Trojans return to the road and head into Big Ten country to conclude their non-conference schedule at the Boilermaker Challenge hosted by Purdue at Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind. USC takes on Illinois (4-3) on Thursday (Sept. 14) at 5:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. PT) and the host Boilermakers (5-2) on Friday (Sept. 15) at 8 p.m. ET. Both matches will be shown live on Big Ten Network.
- USC snapped a three-match losing streak to San Diego and improved to 13-4 all-time against the Toreros.
- The Trojans improved to 196-54 all-time at Galen Center.
