No. 22 USC Women's Volleyball Grounds Golden Eagles For 3-0 Sweep

Senior OH Skylar Fields poured in 17 kills to lead the Women of Troy to their first win of the season
HOUSTON – The No. 22-ranked USC women's volleyball team (1-2) swept Southern Mississippi (0-3) in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) at Fertitta Center on Sunday, Aug. 27, to post the team's first victory of the 2023 season.

- Sr. OH Skylar Fields led all players with 17 kills (3e, 33att) with .424 hitting and added nine digs, two blocks, and an ace.
- Jr. setter Mia Tuaniga dished out 30 assists to go with six digs, two blocks, and two kills.
- Jr. OPP Katelyn Smith added eight kills (3e, 21att) on .238 hitting and had three blocks.
- Sr. MB Lindsey Miller led all players with six blocks and added five kills (0e) on 10 swings to hit .500. She also served two aces to secure the last two points in the Trojans' 25-16 win in the third set.
- So. LIB Gala Trubint dug up 11 balls and had two service aces and two assists. Trubint served nine straight rallies to power USC's 10-0 run in the third set.
- So. MB Tyrah Ariail contributed six kills (1e) on 10 swings for .500 hitting and tallied three blocks.
- Facing her mother Jenny Hazelwood's team, Fr. setter Allie Hazelwood came into the match to close the third set and recorded her first two collegiate assists to help the Trojans seal the sweep.
- For Southern Miss, Mia Wesley led with 10 kills but hit .081 (7e, 37att) and added five digs and two blocks. Aysu Dalogullari and Cailin Demps each had six kills apiece and Megan Harris led the Golden Eagles with eight digs.
- The first set went back and forth early on, but USC pulled away to lead by seven at 17-10 and continued to roll for the 25-17 win behind five kills from Fields. Smith and Ariail each added three kills and the Trojans had three blocks. USC hit .312 in the opening frame to outpace the .000 outing by the Eagles.
- Southern Miss led, 18-17, in the second, but the Women of Troy wrestled the lead away once more to roll to a 2-0 lead on a 25-21 win. Fields added six more kills in set two and did yeoman's work on the defensive end to gather seven of her nine digs. The Trojans put up four more blocks and served three aces in the second set.
- The Eagles led by three early in the third, but an incredible nine-serve run by Trubint produced a 10-0 run for the Trojans who led, 20-11, when the dust had settled. Miller went to the back line to serve the final two points of a 25-16 win that ended on her service aces. Fields racked up six more kills in the third without an error.
- The Trojans return to Los Angeles for a brief respite and then head further westward to meet Hawai'i for a pair of matches at Simplifi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center on Thursday (Aug. 31) and Saturday (Sept. 2). Both matches are set for 7 p.m. HT starts (10 p.m. PT) and will be shown live on the Hawai'i OC16 Spectrum channel locally and on ESPN+.
- USC won its first-ever meeting with Southern Mississippi.
- The Women of Troy improve to 32-8 all-time in the state of Texas and go to 4-2 in the city of Houston.
