FULLERTON, Calif. --Though they had plenty of opportunities, the USC baseball team had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 10 Trojans on base in a 4-2 loss at the hands of the No. 24 Cal State Fullerton Titans on Wednesday.

Freshman Eric Hammond (2-4) started and took the loss on the mound for USC (25-19-1). The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, zero earned, on two hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. Sophomore Caden Connolly was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

At the plate, the Trojans were paced by senior Cole Gabrielson, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Freshman Austin Overn furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two walks. Freshman Ethan Hedges also contributed for USC, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans were trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Gabrielson put USC on the board with a two-out solo home run off freshman Jesse Alfaro.

The Trojans kept the deficit at 4-1 before closing the gap further in the eighth. Junior Carson Wells came across to score the lone run of the inning for USC, which tightened the Titans lead to 4-2. The Trojans were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
