May 14, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – For the third straight game, the USC baseball team got dominant pitching and timely hits as the Trojans picked up a 5-1 win over Arizona State to close a three-game sweep.
The Trojans scored four runs in the final two innings to take it, moving to 31-20-1 overall and 16-11 in Pac-12 play. ASU falls to 29-21, 14-12. Coming into the series, ASU had been held to one or fewer runs just twice on the year. USC did it three times this weekend.
Tyler Stromsborg held the Sun Devils in check for 6.2 innings on Sunday, giving up just one run on four hits. Caden Connolly took over to get the final out of the seventh and the first two of the eighth, before handing it off to Kyle Wisch for his sixth save of the year and second of the weekend.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and would stay tied heading into the bottom of the seventh. Austin Overn worked a leadoff walk to start the seventh and was eventually brought home on a bunt single by Johnny Olmstead, who caught the ASU third baseman playing deep with two outs.
USC tacked on three runs in the bottom of the eighth, getting RBI knocks from Ryan Jackson and Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek.
