Caden Aoki Tosses Eight Scoreless as USC Baseball Takes Down ASU, 2-0
May 13, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Caden Aoki was masterful on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field, throwing eight scoreless innings to carry the USC baseball team past Arizona State, 2-0.
The Trojans scored their only two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, drawing a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and then walk to plate the pair. USC held the Sun Devils to a season low three hits for the second night in a row. The Trojans move to 30-20-1 overall and 15-11 in Pac-12 play, while ASU falls to 29-20, 14-11. USC is now 25-6 at home and has won all eight of its weekend series at Dedeaux Field.
Aoki's 8.0 innings pitched were a career high for the freshman, as he gave up just the three hits and walked none. Only one runner got past first base against the Trojan righty, with Aoki stranding that lone runner on third in the top of the third inning. Aoki now owns a 2.04 ERA and is 4-1 on the season.
Garrett Clarke tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his seventh save of the year, working around a leadoff walk with three straight strikeouts.
Johnny Olmstead was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth and Carson Wells followed with a single. After a fielder's choice left USC with runners on the corners, Nick Lopez drew a two-out walk to load them up. Ethan Hedges worked a full count and then was hit by a pitch to score the go-ahead run and Jacob Galloway followed with another walk to bring home the second.
ASU starter Khristian Curtis tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, but took a no-decision. Owen Stevenson took the loss out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils.
