No. 1 USC Women’s Water Polo Powers Into MPSF Final With 16-10 Win Over Cal
April 29, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
Tilly Kearns scores a season-high five goals for the second straight game to help USC reach tomorrow’s MPSF title match.
SAN JOSÉ, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team flexed its scoring muscle to the tune of a 16-10 win over No. 6 California in today's MPSF Semifinals, with Tilly Kearns dishing out a game-high five goals for the second straight game. The Trojans turned a defensive start into an offensive explosion to get the better of the Golden Bears, moving into the MPSF final to take aim at an eighth conference crown. USC has now won 14 straight games and grips a 26-1 overall record as it turns to take on No. 2 Stanford in tomorrow's title match.
The Trojan defense made a statement early, silencing the Golden Bears for over 11 minutes while the offense clicked off a 3-0 lead. Grace Tehaney struck twice in that early surge to keep her Trojans on track and tally her 10th straight game with at least one goal. The Bears would break through twice in the second period — both on power plays — while USC rattled off four goals at the other end. Alejandra Aznar sizzled in USC's fourth of the day, and a Carolyne Stern stop sent USC on the counterattack, where Téa Poljak punched up a 5-1 lead for the Trojans.
After Cal scored its second goal, Kearns became unleashed. She hammered home her first to get USC a 6-2 halftime advantage and then ripped in USC's first three goals of the second half to build a 9-3 lead. In an exclusion-riddled third period, USC outpaced the Bears, netting nice goals from Maggie Johnson and Mireia Guiral in the final minute of the frame to take the Trojans ahead 12-6 entering the fourth. There, the teams would stay largely in stride. Kearns' fifth goal came fast, and Paige Hauschild found the top corner to balloon USC's advantage to 14-6. Cal got some goals to go next, but USC was well in control. In the final minute, Claire Haas earned a 5-meter penalty shot for the Trojans, and fellow senior Christina Crum stepped up to blast it in for USC's final goal of the 16-10 semifinal victory.
