USC Baseball Falls to Washington 7-6 Despite Eighth-Inning Lead

SEATTLE, Wash. --The USC Trojans took a 6-3 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on and fell 7-6 to the Washington Huskies Saturday.
Senior Kyle Wisch (0-1) took the loss on the mound for USC (25-16-1, 11-9). Freshman Caden Aoki had a solid performance, giving up just one earned run in 5.2 innings pitcher, but took a no-decision.
At the plate, the Trojans were led by senior Nick Lopez, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and two RBI. Freshman Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek furnished a standout performance as well, going 3-for-5. Freshman Jacob Galloway also contributed for USC, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Austin Overn came across to score the lone run of the inning for USC and get them on the board.
The Trojans then held the Huskies scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. USC picked up a run on Lopez's leadoff home run off of junior Kiefer Lord, which brought the Trojans lead to 2-0.
USC kept Washington scoreless before expanding their lead to 4-0 the following inning. Junior Carson Wells' run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Trojans.
The Huskies fought back, closing the gap to 4-1 until USC added some insurance in the sixth. The Trojans scored two runs off of Washington pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Lopez, bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of USC. The Trojans were unable to hold the lead, as Washington scored six times over the remaining three innings, scoring twice in the sixth and four times in the eighth, to grab the 7-6 win.
