USC Baseball Hosts Nevada Then Opens Pac-12 Play Against No. 2 Stanford

THIS WEEK: The USC baseball team hosts Nevada for a midweek matchup on Wednesday and then opens Pac-12 play at home with a three-game series against No. 2 Stanford starting on Friday.

LAST WEEK: The Trojans co-hosted the Southern California College Baseball Classic with UCLA last weekend, beating both Sacramento State and Tulane at home, before losing to the No. 17 Bruins on the road. USC also dropped its midweek contest against UC Riverside to go 2-2 on the week.

SERIES VS. NEVADA: The Trojans are 6-2 all-time against Nevada. The teams first played in 1962 and last played in 2021. The Wolfpack came to Los Angeles for a series in 2021, with USC winning all three games.

BIG UNIT IN THE HOUSE: Trojan great Randy Johnson will throw out the first pitch before Friday's Pac-12 opener at Dedeaux Field. Johnson played three seasons at USC (1983-85) before going on to have a legendary MLB career that included five Cy Young Awards, 10 All-Star games, a World Series MVP and induction into the MLB Hall of Fame.

WBC TROJANS: USC has four alums playing in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, which is tied with Long Beach State and NC State for the most among all NCAA schools. Lars Nootbaar will compete for Japan, Garrett Stubbs and Robert Stock will play for Israel, and Daniel Cooper is on the Great Britain roster.

PLAYER NOTES:
- Austin Overn currently leads the nation with 7 triples, just 11 games into his collegiate career. The 7 triples are just three away from the USC single season record of 10 (the NCAA record is 17). Overn is already 5th on the USC single season list, tied with Fred Lynn (1972) and Mark Smith (1991). Overn also is tied for the team lead in hits (17) and total bases (34), and is 2nd on the team and 7th in the league with a .739 slugging percentage. Overn was a walk-on WR on the USC football team this past fall, but did not appear in a game.
- Nick Lopez's 24 total bases are 2nd among Pac-12 players and tied for the team lead. His 5 doubles are 3rd in the conference, 17 hits are 4th and 4 homers are 5th. Lopez is also the toughest hitter in the Pac-12 to strike out, with 17.0 ab/k, an average that is 38th in the country.
- Cole Gabrielson is tied for the conference lead with 5 homers while also leading the Trojans and sitting 6th in the Pac-12 with 10 walks. His 15 RBI lead the squad and are 4th in the Pac-12 and his .892 slugging percentage is tops in the conference and 38th in the nation. Gabrielson has the only 2 home run game of the season for USC, hitting a pair of long balls against Marist on 2/19.
- Carson Wells made a dramatic game-saving catch against Sacramento State (3/3) preserving a one-run lead by robbing a home run in the 9th inning. Wells is also tied for the team lead in doubles with 5.
- The trio of Garrett Clarke, Josh Blum and Caden Connolly have been USC's most effective relievers to date, with each of them making a team high 6 appearances on the mound this season.
- Clarke owns a 0.00 ERA in 8.00 IP, with a .172 opponent batting average.
- Blum has a 1.00 ERA in 9.0 IP, striking out a team best 13 batters to just 2 walks allowed. Opponents are hitting just .133 against him.
- Connolly has 8.1 IP and a 1.08 ERA, with the lefty striking out 10 batters and walking 3. Opponents are hitting just .107 against him.
