Laurent Gosselin-Paradis wins on platform to help Troy sweeps Pac-12 diving meet.
USC, led by Pac-12 individual champions Kaitlyn Dobler and Laurent Gosselin-Paradis, wrapped up another successful evening at the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
NCAA Champion Dobler won her third consecutive Pac-12 100y breaststroke title, posting a meet record 57.10 en route to the crown. With the win, Dobler became the first Trojan to win three consecutive Pac-12 100y breaststroke titles, and the second in history to win three total (Rebecca Soni won titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009). Dobler was joined by teammate Isabelle Odgers on the podium as the fifth year touched second in 58.92.
Freshman Gosselin-Paradis scored 416.05 points during finals to take the event, winning by a margin of 56.1 points. For the first time since 1999, and just the second time in USC history, the Trojans claimed all three Pac-12 men's diving events (Justin Dumais won 1-Meter, 3-Meter, Platform in 1999). Gosselin-Paradis's win on platform marks the Trojans 14th all-time title in the event and the 37th all-time Pac-12 diving title for USC. Under the tutelage of head coach Hongping Li, USC secured back-to-back Pac-12 platform diving titles, with senior George Korovin (this year's 3-meter champion) winning the event last season.
Two Trojans qualified for the 100y backstroke championship final, with Aria Bernal finishing sixth in 52.67, just ahead of Hanna Henderson who touched seventh in 53.05. Junior Caroline Famous was second in the consolation final in 53.60.
Junior Anicka Delgado won the consolation final of the 100y butterfly, clocking a 52.25. Sophomore Genevieve Sasseville was 8th in consols in 54.04.
On 3-meter, USC senior Nike Agunbiade finished second, scoring 327.40 points during finals. Fifth year Lina Sculti was sixth in finals with 294.50 points.
USC freshmen impressed in the 400y IM as Justina Kozan (4:09.33) and Ashley McMillan (4:11.79) finished fourth and seventh, respectively.
The Women of Troy closed out the third evening of competition with a heartbreaking result, as the Trojans 400y medley relay quartet of Bernal, Dobler, Delgado and Henderson would suffer a disqualification.
As it stands now, Stanford leads the way with 1149.55 points, followed by Cal with 874.5 and USC with 817.5. Action concludes tomorrow, with prelims set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
