USC’s JuJu Watkins Sweeps Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Awards As Player and Freshman of the Week
December 04, 2023 | Women's Basketball
She’s the fourth player in the conference to score both honors in the same week.
Fresh off matching the USC record of three straight 30-point performances, freshman JuJu Watkins has claimed a sweep of the Pac-12's weekly awards, named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week today (Dec. 4). She is the first Trojan to sweep, and the fourth player in the conference to do so. She has now picked up four straight Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors — also a conference record.
Watkins' efforts in the past week helped keep the Trojans on an undefeated start to 2023-24, with home wins over Cal Poly (85-41) and San Diego (89-58). Watkins dropped 30 points in both games to add to her collection of USC records in these early goings of her Trojan career.
- With a game-high 30 points vs. Cal Poly, Watkins recorded her fourth 30-point game and broke the freshman record held by Lisa Leslie and Paula McGee for most 30-point games in a season.
- Watkins became the fourth Trojan to record back-to-back 30-point games, following Cheryl Miller, Cherie Nelson and Paula McGee.
- With a game-high 30 points vs. USD, Watkins recorded her fifth 30-point game of the season, having set the freshman record for most 30-point games in a season with her effort vs. Cal Poly.
- It was Watkins' third consecutive 30-point outing, matching the USC record set by Cheryl Miller with three straight 30-point outing in her junior season (1984-85).
- Watkins has scored double digits in all seven games, with 191 total points to date (27.3 ppg).
- Against USD, Watkins recorded a season-high five assists.
- Watkins was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line in USC's last two games.
Watkins and her Women of Troy continue their home stand this week, setting up for a doubleheader with the USC men on Sunday (Dec. 10). The Women of Troy host UC Riverside at 3:30 p.m. that day following the USC men's 1 p.m. game vs. Long Beach State.
