November 13, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
The Trojans’ first-year OH produced back-to-back double-doubles in road matches at Washington and WSU
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball OH London Wijay (Porter Ranch, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Nov. 6-12, the Conference announced on Monday, Nov. 13.
Â
Wijay—who receives her fourth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award—recorded back-to-back double-doubles for the Women of Troy and helped USC get a crucial road split in the Evergreen State with a 3-0 win over Washington and a narrow five-set loss to ninth-ranked Washington State. Against the Huskies, she logged 10 kills (3e, 27att) and hit .259 to go with 10 digs and two service aces. She then racked up 19.0 points against the Cougars with 18 kills (4e, 38att) on .368 hitting with a career-high matching 12 digs to go with two blocks. She has had six matches in double-digit kills, eight in double-digit points, and five in double-digit digs this season. On the year, Wijay is the Trojans' second-leading scorer with 2.89 points per set and averages 2.60 kills per set on .225 hitting with 10 service aces and 107 digs.Â
Â
She is one of four Trojans to have earned the Pac-12's freshman award more than once in her career. Only she, setter Raquel Lázaro (4 in 2018), OH Ebony Nwanebu (6 in 2013), and OH Samantha Bricio (5 in 2012) have had multiple freshman of the week awards. Among other Pac-12 freshmen this season, California's Maggie Li leads with five awards while Wijay has four. Washington's Kierstyn Barton—who was chosen last week—has won the award three times.
Â
Since 2011, when the Pac-12 began honoring separate offensive and defensive players of the week and introduced a freshman award, Women of Troy have earned 30 offensive awards, 13 defensive awards, and 25 freshman honors. Freshman awards are not included as part of the total awards won by schools.
Â
The 24th-ranked Trojans (17-9, 11-5 Pac-12) are fourth in the Pac-12 standings and prepare to host a pair of matches at Galen Center this weekend. They will take on California (15-12, 4-12) on Friday (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. PT and then face No. 2 Stanford (22-3, 15-1) for a noon PT meeting on Sunday (Nov. 19). The USC-Cal match will be shown on the USC Live Stream platform and the Trojans-Cardinal match will be on Pac-12 Insider.
