October 23, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
The Trojans’ senior outside hitter becomes the 20th player in league history to earn Player of the Week laurels six or more times in a career
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior OH Skylar Fields (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point HS) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and OH London Wijay (Porter Ranch, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Oct. 16-22, the Conference announced on Monday, Oct. 23.
Â
Fields earns her second award of the season and the sixth of her career, which makes her just the 20th player in league history to have been named Pac-12 Player of the Week six or more times. The only Trojan with more weekly awards is three-time All-American OH Samantha Bricio (2012-15).
Â
Wijay collected her third Freshman of the Week award, the second most among first-year Pac-12 athletes. She is one of four Trojans to have earned the Pac-12's freshman award more than once in a career. Only she, Raquel Lázaro (4 in 2018), OH Ebony Nwanebu (6 in 2013), and Bricio (5 in 2012) have had multiple freshman of the week awards.
Â
Fields' sixth-career award is the 88th all-time for USC. Wijay's third-career award is USC's 24th all-time freshman honor for the Trojans. Since 2011, when the Pac-12 began honoring separate offensive and defensive players of the week and introduced a freshman award, Women of troy have earned 29 offensive awards, 13 defensive awards, and now 24 freshman honors. Freshman awards are not included as part of the total awards won by schools.
Â
Fields and Wijay helped lead the Trojans to back-to-back five-set wins over No. 4 Washington State and Washington at Galen Center over the weekend. Fields had 21 and 23 kills and put up her fourth and fifth double-doubles of the season (14th and 15th of her career). Wijay returned to action after missing the last six matches and was an offensive catalyst for the Women of Troy.
Â
The Trojans (13-7, 7-3 Pac-12) are tied for third in the league standings and open the back half of the Pac-12 schedule on the road with matches at Colorado (12-9, 4-6) on Friday, Oct. 27, and then at Utah (9-11, 4-6) on Sunday (Oct. 29).Â
