January 18, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
Geoghegan collected 385 digs as a libero/defensive specialist at San Diego State
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team has signed transfer defender Ellie Geoghegan (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) from San Diego State head coach Brad Keller announced on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
"Ellie is a fantastic athlete with a high volleyball IQ," said Keller. "She is an effective passer and a proven defender. We think she will make a difference for our program in both areas and are excited to get her going at Galen Center this spring."
Geoghegan was one of three SDSU players to see action in all 117 sets for the Aztecs in 2022. She collected 385 digs and averaged 3.29 digs per set (seventh in the Mountain West) and totaled 97 assists (0.83 aps) with 31 service aces (0.26 saps). Geoghegan had 19 matches in double-digit digs and reached the 20-dig mark five times with a career-best 24 digs at New Mexico on Oct. 20. She also had multiple service aces in eight matches and recorded a high of four aces against Fresno State (Nov. 7). Geoghegan was a two-time Mountain West Freshman of the Week recipient (Oct. 24, Nov. 21) and was the conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24.
Geoghegan prepped at Mira Costa High School (the same school as Trojan graduate libero Kelli Barry) in Manhattan Beach, Calif., where she won two varsity letters. She was named the Bay League Division I Libero of the Year and garnered first-team all-conference accolades for helping the Mustangs to a 28-9 record, highlighted by a league championship and a regional semifinal appearance in the 2021 CIF Open Division state tournament. Geoghegan was a first-team Daily Breeze all-area choice and averaged 4.50 digs per set (218 total digs) with 17 service aces during her senior season. She was a four-year scholar-athlete and principal's honor roll student-athlete. Geoghegan played for Sunshine Volleyball Club for two years and Surfside Volleyball Club for four years. She was an all-tournament honorable mention at the 2022 Winter Volleyball Championships in Chicago, Ill., and was named a 2022 Prep Volleyball Shooting Star.
Under Keller, USC (22-11) finished fourth in the Pac-12 standings (13-7) in 2022 and was awarded one of 32 at-large berths into the NCAA tournament. The Women of Troy defeated High Point in the first round of the tourney but were eliminated by 10th-ranked site host Ohio State. It was the first NCAA tournament victory for Keller, and the program's first appearance in the tourney since 2019.
