No. 6 USC Men's Volleyball Beat No. 15 BYU For First Regular Season Sweep Over Cougars Since 2011

Lucas Frassrand and Sam Kobrine each had 10 kills and Simon Gallas added 9 kills to help the No. 6 USC men's volleyball beat No. 15 BYU, 25-18, 25-10, 25-17, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Saturday (March 5) at USC's Galen Center.

It was the Trojans' second home victory in as many nights over the Cougars, giving USC its first regular season sweep of BYU since 2011. Troy posted a 3-1 win over BYU on Friday (March 4).

BYU's 45 total points were its fewest in a match in 2022. The Cougars' 10 points in the second set not only were their fewest in any set this season, but were their fewest in a non-fifth set against the Trojans in the rally scoring era dating to 2001.

USC improved to 13-3 overall in 2022 and 3-1 in the MPSF while remaining undefeated (9-0) at home in 2022.

BYU lost its ninth straight match of the season while falling to 5-11 overall and 0-4 in the MPSF.

USC hit a blazing .523 in the match, while BYU was held to .076. USC had more blocks (7.0 to 1.0), aces (5 to 2) and digs (22 to 19).

Frassrand hit .714 in the match and had 3 blocks, Kobrine hit .562 and had 3 blocks and 2 aces and Gallas hit .368. Chris Hall had a match-best 9 digs with 33 assists, Brandon Browning had 7 kills (hitting .500) and 4 digs and Liam Schroeder had 3 blocks.

For BYU, Davide Gardini had 5 kills and Mitchel Worthington had 6 digs.

USC jumped out to a 5-1 start in the first set and extended it to 12-6 and 19-12, keeping the Cougars at bay the whole way while hitting .526.

The Trojans scored the first 3 points of the second set and never looked back, moving out to leads of 7-2, 16-6, 19-7 and 23-9 while hitting .524 and getting 3 blocks in the set.Â

In the third set, USC went on a 3-point run to open a 7-4 lead, then extended it to 9-5, 16-10, 20-12 and 22-13 to easily finish out the match while hitting .523.

USC now takes a break from MPSF play next week when it hosts non-league opponents George Mason on Wednesday (March 9) and Vanguard on Friday (March 11), both at 7 p.m. PT in the Galen Center.
