USC Men's and Women's Diving Set to Host Trojan Invitational
November 10, 2022 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
USC, led by 24th year head coach Hongping Li, will host the eight-team Trojan Diving Invitational, Friday through Sunday (Nov. 11-13), at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
Divers from USC, Air Force, UCLA, Cal, Fresno State, UNLV, Pepperdine and CBU will compete on all three specialties. Results will be available at divemeets.com.
Action Friday begins with men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter prelims at 11 a.m. with finals starting at 12:15. Saturday features women's platform and men's 3-meter with 11 a.m. prelims and 12:15 p.m. finals. Saturday will also feature a first ever team event from 1:40-2:00 p.m. Sunday's men's platform and women's 1-meter begins at 11 a.m., with finals at 12:25 p.m.
This past weekend, the USC diving squad opened the 2022-23 season at home against Arizona State and Arizona, with freshmen Shangfei Wang winning on 1-meter against both schools (371.48, 354.23). Freshman Laurent Gosselin-Paradis claimed the 3-meter against ASU (339.23), while George Korovin took the 3-meter against the Wildcats (379.20).
During her Trojan debut, Stanford graduate transfer Carolina Sculti did not disappoint, claiming both the 1-meter (282.45) and 3-meter (323.33) against ASU, while also leading a Trojan sweep on both boards. Against Arizona, Sculti was second on both boards.
2022-23 DIVING SQUAD
USC's diving contingent promises to be one of the strongest in the conference. Li's small but mighty team of 12 boasts four All-American divers, with seven of the twelve having previously earned NCAA bids.
Last season, USC saw Nike Agunbiade finish sixth on platform at NCAA's and second on platform at Pac-12's. Trojan George Korovin captured the Pac-12 platform event last season and finished 21st on 1-meter at NCAA's. Sophomore springboard specialist Shangfei Wang finished third in the consolation final of the NCAA men's 3-meter competition, earning All-American honorable mention honors.
Grad transfer Sculti, the 2019 Pac-12 Diving Newcomer of the Year and two time Pac-12 3-meter champion, looks to lead Troy this season. Other Trojan newcomers include Laurent Gosselin-Paradis and Robert Gref.
