No. 12 USC Men's Volleyball Sweeps Princeton 3-0 in Home Opener

LOS ANGELES--Simon Gallas had 16 kills while hitting .303 to help the No. 12 ranked USC men's volleyball team sweep Princeton 3-0 (35-33, 25-22, 25-20) in its 2022 home opener in the Galen Center on Wednesday (Jan. 12).
USC improves to 3-0 on the season, which is their best start in 4 years since opening with a similar record in 2018. The Tigers were playing in their first match in 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Liam Schroeder tallied on 9 kills, hitting .615 and recorded four 4 blocks, while Brandon Browning was a figure at defense collecting 8 digs. Lucas Frassrand was efficient from the middle hitting .364 with 5 kills and recording 3 blocks.
For Princeton, Ben Harrington collected 13 kills hitting .385, while Nate Thompson added 10 kills hitting .529.
As a team, USC hit. 222 compared to Princeton's .295.
The Tigers maintained a steady lead throughout the beginning of set one until the Trojans tied up the score at 15-15 with a kill from Frassrand out of the middle. Freshman Austin Stuard was a bright spot for the Trojans with his appearance as a serving specialist and made some impressive digs. The two teams would exchange points back and forth and be forced to play extra points as the ties continued beyond 24-24. In true fight on fashion, the Trojans did not give up and battled to win the first set 35-33. This was the most points scored in a set since a 40-42 set score against Lewis in 2018.
Princeton came out swinging in the second set and took a 11-6 lead forcing the Trojans to call an early timeout. This season, USC has shown the ability to adjust mid-match, and they did just that. With a newly lit fire, the Trojans pushed ahead at 19-18 highlighted by aces scored by Sam Kobrine and Frassrand and a massive solo block from Liam Schroeder. USC never lost the lead in the remainder of the set and won 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
USC held onto the momentum from the first two sets and sprinted to an 11-8 lead. Gallas and Frassrand each scored aces for the Trojans, and USC stayed ahead of the Tigers to close out the set 25-22.
The Trojans return to the Galen Center on Friday (Jan. 14) at 10 a.m. PT to take on Erskine in the first-ever meeting of the two teams. USC hopes to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2015.
