No. 1 USC Women's Water Polo Tallies 10th Win of 2021
Trojans stay undefeated with a 12-5 win over No. 17 San José State.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team put together a balanced effort to tack up its 10th win of the year with a 12-5 victory over visiting No. 17 San José State today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Hat tricks from Bayley Weber and Denise Mammolito helped pave the way to victory for the Trojans, who are now 10-0 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play.
USC plugged in the first four goals of the day with a pair punched in by Mireia Guiral in the first frame to go with Bayley Weber's first as USC went up 3-0 by the end of first before Denise Mammolito hammered in her first with a 5-meter penalty shot to start the second. The Spartans broke up the rally to make it 4-1, only to see Mammolito deliver a picture-perfect lob. Guiral earned an exclusion next and popped the ball to Grace Tehaney for a 6-1 USC lead 30 seconds before halftime.
In the third, USC kept charging, with Sophia Lucas knocking in her first goal of the year to make it 7-1 Trojans. SJSU scored while pulling even on a 6-on-5 later, and then the Trojans mounted another rally. Mammolito and Weber worked their way to hat tricks during USC's four-goal surge, and USC was up 11-2 entering the fourth. In the cage, Carolyne Stern gave way to Erin Tharp, who made a big stop against a SJSU 5-meter penalty shot to highlight the final frame along the way to USC's final 12-5 win.
Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Indiana next week for a pair of MPSF matchups against the Hoosiers on April 2 and 3.
