USC Baseball Falls 2-1 to Cal Poly
February 26, 2021 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Cal Poly on Friday night at Dedeaux Field in the opening matchup of a three-game series.
Â
The Trojans came back to tie the game up in the sixth, but an eighth-inning run won it for the visitors. USC falls to 2-2 on the year, while Cal Poly moves to 2-3.
Â
It was a pitchers' duel for most of the night, with both team's starters keeping things scoreless through the first five innings. The Mustangs would break through with an unearned run in the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Myles Emmerson.
Â
USC got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases and getting a walk from Ben Ramirez to tie it. It would be Matt Lopez who would drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth for Cal Poly, however, as he hit a bloop single that fell in down the right field line.
Â
Isaac Esqueda struck out eight and walked one in the start, giving up just the unearned run in 6.0 innings. Jaden Agassi suffered the loss in relief. Cal Poly starter Drew Thorpe gave up two hits and a run in 6.0 innings and reliever Andrew Alvarez tossed the final 3.0 to pick up the win.
