USC Men's Volleyball Drops Another 4-Setter At Home To No. 7 UCLA

Cole Ketrzynski had 21 kills and Ethan Champlin added 13 kills and 9 digs to lead the No. 7-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team to a 27-25, 25-21, 23-25, 34-32 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at USC's Galen Pavilion on Saturday (Feb. 20).
UCLA improved to 4-2 overall and in the MPSF, while USC dropped to 1-2 overall and in the MPSF.
It was the last of 3 consecutive matches between USC and UCLA. The Trojans opened their season last Saturday (Feb. 14) with a 3-1 win at UCLA, then the Bruins returned the favor with a 3-1 victory at USC on Thursday (Feb. 18).
Brandon Browning led USC with 11 kills and 3 blocks, while Clay Dickinson came off the bench to get 7 kills and 8 digs, Lucas Frassrand had 7 kills while hitting .455, Liam Schroeder had 6 kills while hitting .750 and added 3 blocks, Chris Hall had 8 digs and 35 assists and Cole Paxson had 7 digs.
Champlin hit .400 for UCLA. Teammate Austin Matautia had 11 kills and 5 blocks, Merrick McHenry had 5 blocks and Cole Pender had 7 digs.
UCLA hit .304 to USC's .150. The Bruins posted 10 blocks to USC's 4.
UCLA got out to an 8-4 lead in the first set, but USC tied it at 13-13 and the set stayed close until a Trojan serving error followed by a UCLA kill gave the Bruins the set (UCLA hit .545 to USC's .429).
The second set was close until UCLA moved ahead 14-11 and USC could never close the gap, with the Bruins scoring the set's final 3 points.
The third set was tight until a 4-0 USC run gave the Trojans a 23-20 lead, but the Bruins scored the next 3 points only to have a UCLA service error followed by a Bruin block error end the set.
Back-to-back points gave USC a 12-10 lead in the fourth set and then Troy extended it to 17-12, but UCLA crept back and used a 4-0 run to go up 21-20 before USC rebounded to build a 24-22 margin, then the Bruins knotted it at 24-24 and finished with back-to-back kills in extra time to close out the match.
USC next plays a pair of matches versus No. 6 Pepperdine, first on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at home in the Galen Center at 5 p.m. PT and then on Friday (Feb. 26) at Pepperdine at 6 p.m. PT.
