USC Captures Southern Highlands Collegiate For First Win Of Season
March 03, 2020 | Men's Golf, Features
Freshman Yuxin Lin ties for first for career best finish.
Juniors Issei Tanabe and Kaito Onishi fired sub-par rounds while freshman Yuxin Lin posted a career-best tie for first, the trio leading USC as it completed a wire-to-wire performance to win its first tournament of the season, claiming the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Tuesday (March 3) at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas.
Â
USC began the final round with a nine-stroke lead and needed most of it today, winning by two shots at 3-under 861 (287-283-291). The Trojans were briefly caught on the back 9 but held firm and finished two strokes ahead of Texas and three ahead of Texas Tech, whose 7-under was low round of the day.
Â
"I'm elated for our team," USC Coach Chris Zambri said. "We haven't had the kind of year we've wanted to until this week. I'm really happy for them. We've worked hard all year. This is a great team and we're moving in the right direction."
Â
Lin began his final round ahead by five strokes but couldn't find the consistency that marked his first two rounds. He was caught by Texas' Parker Coody on 18, whose final-round 67 forced a playoff, which he won with a par on the first hole.
Â
Still, Lin posted his first top 10 finish as a Trojan and his fourth top 15 finish of the season in five starts.
Â
Tanabe joined Lin with a season-best effort, tying for ninth at 2-under 214 (71-74-69) thanks to his fifth round in the 60s this year. He had four birdies in the final round, including two in a 2-under front 9.
Â
Sophomore Cameron Henry nailed down his second-best finish of the season, taking 25th at 3-over 219 (72-70-77). Like Lin, he wasn't as sharp as he was in the first two rounds, but his key birdie on 18 lifted USC to a three-stroke lead ahead of Lin's final hole.
Â
Onishi tied for 43rd at 7-over 223 (77-75-71) following his 1-under final round that saw a 2-under back 9 and another closing birdie on 18.
Â
Junior Leon D'Souza, Troy's top finisher in its last three events, tied for 67th at 14-over 230 (79-72-79), his second round a counting score.
Â
Freshman Tyler Guo, playing as an individual, tied for 67th with D'Souza 14-over 230 (83-77-70) with a fantastic final round 2-under with four birdies today.
