USC Women Stumble In Fourth, Falling To No. 16 Arizona 73-57
February 02, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Wildcats shot 62 percent in the final quarter to get out of reach of the visiting Trojans, despite 21 points from Alissa Pili.
TUCSON, ARIZ. — The USC women's basketball team was undone by a rough fourth quarter in Tucson, taking a 73-57 loss to No. 16 Arizona. The Trojans were coming off an epic triple-overtime battle less than 48 hours earlier in Tempe, and USC got within four of the Wildcats today before stumbling late. With the loss, USC goes to 11-10 overall and to 3-7 in Pac-12 play. Arizona improves to 18-3, 7-3.
USC stared down a 14-point deficit as it heated up from the perimeter to make things interesting tin Tucson. The Trojans were shooting 32.1 percent from the floor to Arizona's 34.4 percent as USC was down 31-25 by the break. The rebounding tally to that point was 22-18 in favor of the Wildcats. USC carved things down to a four-point game entering the fourth, but the Wildcats dug back in and stayed hot to overpowers the Trojans. Arizona wrapped up shooting 46.3 percent from the floor, while USC was at 40.7 percent. The Wildcats won out on the boards 35-27.
USC received a game-high 21 points from freshman Alissa Pili, who had USC's first 10 points of the day. Arizona had three players hit double digits — Aari McDonald (20 points), Cate Reese (18) and Dominique McBride (14). Reese also had 17 rebounds for the Wildcats.
It was all Alissa Pili for the Trojans out of the gates, as the freshman accounted for the first 10 USC points in the game. Arizona had the upper hand early, though, getting the Trojans int a 14-point hole midway through the second. Down 24-10, USC landed three straight 3-pointers — from Endyia Rogers, Aliyah Jeune and Alyson Miura — to get back in the game. Arizona countered with two buckets next, but USC got a score from Angel Jackson and another 3-pointer from Miura to close the gap. USC was within threee at 28-25 entering the final minute, but the Wildcats got a late 3-pointer to go to lead it 31-25 at halftime.
Arizona opened up with a 6-0 surge to go up 37-25, but the Trojans would reel the Wildcats in. After Kayla Overbeck and Pili punched up points in the paint, Miura would land her third 3-pointer of the day, making it 43-37. USC kept coming, following an Arizona three-point play with a bucket from Rogers and 3-pointer from Jeune to get it to a four-point margin. That's where it would stay after Pili provided a putback to wrap the quarter with USC trailing 50-46. Arizona capitalized on some Trojan turnovers and largely controlled the boards in the fourth, making an 11-0 run to lead it 73-55 with 2:04 to go. USC was out of reach from there, and finished up with a 73-57 defeat in Tucson.
