USC Women Edged Out At The Line By No. 18 Arizona
January 03, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Jeune and Endyia Rogers combine for 33 points in 65-57 loss to the Wildcats.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team was right in stride with No. 18 Arizona tonight at Galen Center, but the Wildcats won out from the free-throw line to claim a 65-57 win over the Trojans. Arizona shot — and made — 10 more free throws than USC, including five in a row to close out the game. USC goes to 8-5 overall and to 0-2 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Arizona continues to ride the nation's longest active win streak at 19 in a row to hold a 13-0 overall and 2-0 conference mark.
USC and Arizona fought through four lead changes and six ties in the first half after overcoming a slow start. By halftime, USC had freshmen Endyia Rogers and Angel Jackson both in double digits while the Trojans were shooting 35.7 percent froth floor. Arizona had Aari McDonald in double figures, and the Wildcats were hitting at a 37.5-percent clip to lead it 33-32 at the break. That's actually where the game ended as well. Both teams would land five 3-pointers apiece and each missed just a single free throw, although the Wildcats made 10 more than the Trojans to get the edge with a 16-of-17 effort to USC's 6-of-7. Arizona also outrebounded USC 35-30.
USC was led in scoring by Aliyah Jeune with 17 points — 15 of which came in the second half. Angel Jackson matched her career best with 16 points, and fellow freshman Endyia Rogers added 14 for USC along with a team-high eight rebounds. Arizona got a game-high 24 points from Aari McDonald along with 17 from Cate Reese and 11 from Helena Pueyo. Reese also pulled in 11 rebounds for a double-double.
It was a game of threes early on as teams kept pace with each other on 3-pointers and three-point plays. Freshman Endyia Rogers landed two of those 3-pointers for the Trojan cause, the second of which knotted things at 9-9 with 3:25 on the clock. Rogers kept clicking for the Trojans, and as she collected 12 points for herself in the first frame, she helped lift USC into the lead, up 17-16 by the end of the first. USC would build out a five-point lead, up 23-18 on a bucket in the lane from Angel Jackson at 7:25. Arizona responded with a 7-0 surge to steal back ahead until Alyson Miura joined the scoresheet for USC and planted a go-ahead 3-pointer at 3:40 to tug the Trojans ahead 28-27. That sparked a 7-0 run for the Trojans, who got up 32-27 with 2:45 left. Again the Wildcats answered back, ending the half just as it began with a three-point play and a 3-pointer landed to go up 33-32 for halftime.
The teams traded 7-0 runs again in the third, as USC's Aliyah Jeune worked her way into double digits for the Trojans to get it back to a 1-point margin. That 7-0 surge by USC had it a 46-45 Arizona with 3:47 on the clock, but the Wildcats capped the quarter with the last six points to go up 52-45 entering the fourth. USC punched up a 6-0 rally next, sparked by Jackson's career-best 16th points and followed by an Alissa Pili bucket in the paint and a runner from Jeune to make it a three-point game with 6:40 remaining. It was a three-point game with 1:52 to go as well thanks to a bucket from Rogers and a single free throw from Jeune, but Arizona was able to close it out from the line as USC was forced to foul after misses on its end. That would make for a final 65-57 Arizona win in an exciting contest at Galen Center.
