Concordia Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC In MPSF Opener

Raymond Barsemian had 19 kills while hitting .359 to lead the Concordia men's volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-20, 26-24 road sweep over USC in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both squads on Thursday (Jan. 16) in USC' Galen Center Pavilion.

Concordia improved to 3-2 overall, while USC fell to 1-3 on the year.Â

Kyle Gear and Brandon Browning each had 11 kills while hitting .381 for USC and Chris Hall added 9 digs.

Concordia hit .482 to USC's .365.
Â
Jordan Hoppe had 12 kills while hitting .706 along with 8 digs for Concordia and Zack Meyer added 3 aces.

Concordia jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first set and USC never could recover as the Eagles hit .346.  In the second set, Concordia's early 2-point run gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead that the Trojans could not overcome the rest of the set despite hitting .423 to CU's .552. USC scored 4 consecutive points to tie the third set at 14-14, then the set remained tight until Concordia tallied the match's final 2 points in overtime.

USC returns to action on Friday (Jan. 17) when it visits No. 5 Long Beach State, the 2-time defending NCAA champion, at 7 p.m. PT in the Walter Pyramid.
