NJIT Upsets No. 12 USC Men's Volleyball At AVCA Men's Showcase

Alvaro Gimeno had 11 kills while hitting .529, Jens Feldthus added 10 kills while hitting .438 and Luca Berger had 11 blocks to help the New Jersey Institute of Technology men's volleyball team post a 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 upset sweep over No. 12 USC on the second day of the AVCA Men's Showcase tournament on Saturday (Jan. 11) in Fairfax, Va.
NJIT of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association evened its 2019 record to 1-1. USC fell to 1-2 on the year.
In the day's second match, USC's fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member Stanford will face host George Mason of the EIVA.
On Friday (Jan. 10) on the first day of the AVCA Men's Showcase, USC was swept by George Mason, while No. 7 Stanford defeated NJIT in 4 sets.
It was the first time in 4 series meetings that USC lost to NJIT and the first time in 9 all-time meetings that Troy fell to George Mason.
Billy Fauntleroy had 8 kills for USC against NJIT, while Lucas Frassrand added 6 kills (hitting .625).
Julian Meissner added 7 blocks for NJIT, Martin De Chavarria had 5 blocks, Gimeno had 3 aces and Feldthus had 4 blocks and 4 digs.
NJIT hit .442 while the Trojans hit just .044. The Highlanders had 16 blocks to USC's 3 and they served 5 aces.
NJIT scored the first 2 points of the opening set and never surrendered the lead while hitting .550 with 4 blocks. The second set was tied at 15-15 when the Highlanders went on a 5-point run and USC could not catch up as NJIT hit .556 and had 3 aces. With the third set tied at 15-15, NJIT tallied 3 consecutive points to open up all the edge it needed to close out the match.
USC now returns home to open MPSF play against Concordia on Thursday (Jan. 16) at 7 p.m. PT in the USC North Gym, then the Trojans visit No. 4 Long Beach State, the 2-time defending NCAA champion, on Friday (Jan. 17) at 7 p.m. PT in the Walter Pyramid.
