Jasmine Gross and Kalen Owes Receive Pac-12 Weekly Awards

Gross is the Trojans’ 76th all-time Player of the Week winner
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior middle blocker Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and outside hitter Kalen Owes (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15, the Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 16. Washington outside hitter Kara Bajema was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Both Gross and Owes are first-time conference weekly award winners. Gross was chosen as Most Valuable Player of the Trojan Invitational and helped lead the Women of Troy to three victories over Howard, Yale, and Villanova over the weekend. She hit .547 and had 32 kills (2.91 kps) to go with 16 blocks (1.45 bps) and reached double-digit kills in two contests. Owes led the Trojan offense with 44 kills (4.00 kps) and had a service ace and five blocks to score 47.5 points. Defensively, Owes also had 28 digs (2.55 dps) on the weekend to rack up her first two career double-doubles.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the ninth year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 19 offensive awards, 11 defensive awards, and 19 freshman honors. In total, USC counts 76 Player of the Week certificates and ranks third in the Pac-12.
The Trojans' 19 freshman awards rank second (Stanford, 23) in the league. Raquel Lázaro's four honors (2018) ranks third in school history behind Ebony Nwanebu (2013) who had six and Samantha Bricio's five selections in 2012.
The No. 20 Women of Troy (5-3) conclude non-conference play with two contests at the USD Invitational #2 this week. USC faces host San Diego on Thursday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m. and Long Beach State on Friday (Sept. 20) at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif.
