No. 5 USC Takes Down No. 1 Florida State 3-2 in OT
September 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer, Features
In a back and forth contest, the Trojans got the final word after giving up equalizers in both halves, as Hocking scored with just over two minutes left in the first overtime period. The win moves USC to 4-0 on the year.
The action got going in a hurry as McKeown scored less than a minute into the game on an assist from Hocking and after a takeaway by Natalie Jacobs. The Seminoles would even things up 10 minutes later on a shot from outside the box.
After McKeown found the back of the net on a set piece in the 18th minute, the FSU answer came midway through the second half on another long shot that curled inside the post.
Both teams had chances down the stretch to end the game in regulation, but the defenses held tough to push the game into extra time.
A Trojan giveaway in the first minute of overtime nearly spelled disaster for USC, but the Trojans cleared and regained composure, eventually getting McKeown and Hocking out on the break for the game-winning score.
GOALS
1' – USC: Tara McKeown (assisted by Penelope Hocking, Natalie Jacobs) – Jacobs won a challenge at midfield and sent it ahead to Hocking, who took a touch and slid it behind the defense for McKeown. McKeown ran it down in the box and finished with her left foot, inside the right post just 34 seconds into the game.
11' – FSU: Jenna Nighswonger (assisted by Deyna Castellanos) – Nighswonger received the pass at the top of the box and sent a shot through traffic inside the left post.
18' – USC: Tara McKeown (assisted by Ashleigh Plumptre) – The Trojans got a free kick from about 40 yards out and Plumptre sent a ball into the box that was flicked on and in by McKeown for her second goal of the day.
60' – FSU: Deyna Castellanos (unassisted) – Castellanos worked her way towards the top of the box and curved a shot inside the left post.
98' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Tara McKeown) – McKeown got the ball on the break and dribbled up the heart of the FSU defense, eventually sliding the ball to her right for Hocking, who calmly beat the keeper to the far post for the winner.
