Khalia Lanier, Brooke Botkin, and Raquel Lázaro were each chosen to the Pac-12’s preseason all-conference team
SAN FRANCISCO – In a poll of the Pac-12 Conference volleyball head coaches, USC was selected to finish second as announced by the league on Monday, Aug. 12. The coaches also named a preseason All-Pac-12 Team by ballot vote, which included three Trojans including AVCA All-America outside hitters Khalia Lanier and Brooke Botkin; and 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year setter Raquel Lázaro.
Defending Pac-12 and NCAA champion Stanford topped all teams with the maximum 11 first-place votes and had 121 points. The Trojans' second-place selection carried 104 points. Oregon received the only other first-place vote and was selected to finish third with 99 points. Washington had 98 points in fourth place.
Utah (68), Arizona (65), UCLA (63) were chosen fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively. Washington State and California tied for eighth place with 45 points each while Colorado stood narrowly behind with 44 points in 10th. Arizona State received 23 points for an 11th-place predicted finish and Oregon State was at 12th with 17 total points.
The 14-player preseason All-Pac-12 team included five players from Stanford. USC and Oregon each had three players each on the team. Washington, Utah, and UCLA each had one player on the team. Lanier was named to the preseason team for the third straight year while Botkin and Lázaro each make their first-career appearances on the league's preseason team.
USC opens the 2019 season with a pair of matches in the Lonestar State where it faces Texas State (Aug. 30) in San Marcos and Texas (Sept. 1) in Austin. The Trojans will play their first home matches when they host the Trojan Invitational (Sept. 13-14) at Galen Center with Villanova, Yale, and Howard the visitors.
In its first season under Crouch (2018), USC finished with a 22-11 overall record and a second-place tie in the Pac-12 (13-7). The Trojans played one of the toughest schedules in the nation with 18 AVCA ranked opponents. USC made its 36th appearance in the NCAA tournament (28th consecutive), advanced to the second round as the 11th seed before falling in an upset to San Diego; and finished ranked No. 21 in the final coaches' poll. Botkin was named to the AVCA All-America second team and became the program's 42nd all-time All-American. Lázaro was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and received AVCA All-America honorable mention alongside Lanier.
