USC Women’s Volleyball Unveils 2019 Competition Schedule
June 24, 2019 | Women's Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy will appear on the Pac-12 Networks in 15 matches this fall
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team released its 2019 schedule on Monday, June 24, head coach Brent Crouch announced. The Women of Troy will open the new season on August 30 against Texas State in San Marcos, Texas, and will appear in 15 televised matches on the Pac-12 Networks this fall.
The Trojans face 15 opponents that were in last season's NCAA tournament including three regional finalists in national champion Stanford, Oregon, and Texas. In fact, eight of USC's 10 non-conference foes were NCAA teams in 2018.
The Women of Troy get started on the road with a visit to Texas State (Aug. 30) and Texas (Sept. 1) and then face a trio of formidable opponents at the UNI Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa (Sept. 6-7) with Kentucky, tourney host Northern Iowa, and Creighton.
USC hosts the Trojan Invitational (Sept. 13-14) when Yale, Howard, and Villanova pay a visit to Galen Center for the Trojans' first home matches of the season. Both Yale and Howard were NCAA tournament squads in 2018. USC wraps the non-conference schedule with matches at San Diego (Sept. 19) and against Long Beach State (Sept. 20) as part of the USD Invitational #2.
The Trojans draw crosstown rival UCLA to open the Pac-12 schedule on Sept. 25. The matchup will be USC's first of the season on the Pac-12 Networks and be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles. USC faces the defending Pac-12 and NCAA champion Cardinal at Galen Center (Oct. 27) and travels to The Farm on Nov. 15. The Trojans will meet Arizona at home (Sept. 28) and Arizona State on the road (Nov. 27) only once each this season, but play the other nine Pac-12 opponents twice each. The Women of Troy close the regular season with a home match against the Bruins on Nov. 29.
In its first season under Crouch (2018), USC finished with a 22-11 overall record and a second-place tie in the Pac-12 (13-7). The Trojans played one of the toughest schedules in the nation with 18 AVCA ranked opponents. USC made its 36th appearance in the NCAA tournament (28th consecutive), advanced to the second round as the 11th seed before falling in an upset to San Diego; and finished ranked No. 21 in the final coaches' poll. Outside hitter Brooke Botkin was named to the AVCA All-America second team and became the program's 42nd all-time All-American. Freshman setter Raquel Lázaro was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and received AVCA All-America honorable mention alongside outside hitter Khalia Lanier.
