Former Tar Heel will join the Trojans for the 2019-20 season.
The 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year will play her final season of collegiate hoops as a Trojan. A 5-11 guard, Stephanie Watts has signed on to join the Women of Troy as a graduate transfer for the coming 2019-20 season, USC women's basketball head coach Mark Trakh has announced. Watts played three seasons and redshirted one at North Carolina, amassing 1,320 career points as a Tar Heel while pursuing a degree in public policy.
"We are very excited to welcome Stephanie Watts to the Trojan Family," Trakh said. "Stephanie is a great scorer and had a very successful career at the University of North Carolina. She will bring a tremendous level of experience and leadership to our program. We can't wait to see Stephanie on the court in a USC jersey."
Watts broke the 1,000-point barrier early in her 2018-19 redshirt junior season last year, finishing out her three seasons of work as a starter in all but three games in which she appeared. Watts averaged 15.2 points last season while hitting a team-high 82 3-pointers — four short of the USC all-time record — and averaging 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. She topped out with nine 3-pointers landed in a single game last season, but she already held the ACC and UNC program record with 10 makes in her sophomore 2016-17 season. That year, Watts averaged 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game before an injury cut short her season by five games. Watts redshirted the 2017-18 season. As a freshman in 2015-16, Watts picked up conference honors as the ACC Freshman of the Year and was selected ACC Rookie of the Week four times. She averaged 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game in her first season at UNC.
A Naismith and McDonald's All-American out of Weddington High, the Wesley Chapel, N.C., native was the 2015 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. She produced 2,566 points, 1,077 rebounds, 539 assists, 537 steals and 276 blocks during her 111-game high school career.
Watts joins a USC program that has three talented returners in Shalexxus Aaron, Desiree Caldwell and Kayla Overbeck along with a fresh set of incoming stars. With the addition of graduate transfer Watts, USC now has a total of seven newcomers coming to Troy. Watts fellow newcomers are freshmen Madison Campbell (Fresno, Calif.), Angel Jackson (Richmond, Calif.), Alyson Miura (Clackamas, Ore.), Alissa Pili (Anchorage, Alaska), Endyia Rogers (Dallas, Texas) and Kyra White (San Antonio, Texas).
