May 28, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Trojan senior owns top two season stroke averages in school history.
Senior Justin Suh, the world's No. 1 amateur coming off a tie for fourth at the just-completed NCAA Championships with a season's worth of top 15 or better finishes under his belt, has been named a PING All-American first team selection for the second year in a row the GCAA announced Tuesday (May 28).
Suh is USC's first back-to-back first team All-American since Jamie Lovemark in 2007 and 2008. The 2019 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year also earned third team honors in 2017 and honorable mention notice in 2016.
He finished the season with a team-best 69.39 stroke average, second-best in program history behind only his record 68.73 last season. He also matched his school record set last year with 21 rounds in the 60s and was par or better in 29 of 38 rounds.
He finished 34-19-2 against other Golfweek.com top 25 players, fourth-most in the nation, and was 77-33-2 against fellow top 50 players.
The three-time All-Pac-12 first team pick from San Jose, Calif., posted seven top 4 finishes this year – including two wins – and nine in the top 10 and finished no worse than a tie for 15th in all 12 of his starts.
His two wins came at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational at 14-under 202 (67-67-68) and at the Southwestern Invitational at 12-under 204 (68-68-68).
Suh's tie for fourth at the NCAA Championships was his second top 10 at nationals and his third in the top 20
Other top finishes included taking second by a stroke at 16-under 200 (66-64-70) at the N.I.T., a fourth at the Pac-12 Championships at 4-under 280 (69-65-71-75) and ties for fourth at the Fighting Illini Invitational at 2-under 208 (73-67-68) and at the Amer Ari Invitational at 13-under 203 (68-64-71).
Suh makes his pro debut this week at The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, at Muirfield Village G.C. in a tournament founded and hosted by Jack Nicklaus. He is also playing in the Travelers Championships starting June 20-23.
