USC Sixth After 36 Holes Of NCAA Austin Regional
May 14, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Sam Kim again leads Trojans with even second round, tied for seventh overall.
Senior Sam Kim led the No. 7 USC men's golf team for the second day in a row, posting an even round while senior Justin Suh and sophomore Issei Tanabe were both 1-over during the second round of the 2019 NCAA Austin Regional on Tuesday (May 14) at the University of Texas G.C.
The Trojans, after a 4-over second round, sit sixth at a combined for a 10-over 578 (290-288) and are five shots back of fifth place. Host Texas is the only school under par at 16-under 552 while Pepperdine and Clemson are tied for second at even 562. TCU is fourth (572) with Arkansas fifth (573). Iowa is two strokes behind USC in seventh.
USC lowered its score from the first to second round for the ninth time this year, its 4-over round the fourth-best of the day.
But the Trojans still have work to do as only the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Kim is tied for seventh at 2-under 140 (69-71), mixing three birdies and three bogeys as he plays for his first top 10 this year.
Suh is tied for 15th overall at 1-over 143 (71-72). He got off to a 3-under start through five holes before settling for the 72. Tanabe is 38th at 6-over 148 (76-72) after a solid day that say two bogeys against one birdie on 1.
Sophomore Kaito Onishi is tied for 44th at 9-over 151 (78-73) and junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 55th at 11-over 153 (74-79).
