Sam Kim 69 Leads No. 7 USC In NCAA Austin Regional First Round
May 13, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Trojans tied for sixth after 18 holes.
Senior Sam Kim, thanks to a streak of four straight birdies, fired a 2-under 69 to lead the No. 7 USC men's golf team on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Austin Regional on Monday (May 13) at the University of Texas G.C.
Â
The Trojans combined for a 6-over 290 after 18 holes, tied for sixth with Marquette and 12 back of first-place Pepperdine and host Texas (278). TCU is third (280) with Arkansas (282) fourth and Clemson fifth (284).
Â
USC, which has lowered its score from the first to second round in eight events this year, will hope to do it again Tuesday as it needs a top 5 finish to move out of the Austin Region, one of six being held concurrently. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Â
Kim posted his sixth round in the 60s this year and the second time this year in a first round with his 69, which is good for sixth overall and three off the lead. He was 2-over at the turn, but got hot on the back 9 with four birdies in a row between 11 and 14. He bogeyed 15 and birdied 17 to complete his 69.
Â
Senior Justin Suh is tied for 13th overall after a 71. He turned at 1-over before getting to 2-under with birdies on 11, 12 and 13. He eventually fell back to par after bogeys on 15 and 18. The 71 is Suh's 26th round of par or better in 32 outings.
Â
Junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 35th at 3-over 74, sophomore Issei Tanabe is tied for 46th at 5-over 76 and sophomore Kaito Onishi is tied for 60that 7-over 78, which tied his highest score this season.
Â
USC will tee off in the second round beginning at 6 a.m. PT on Tuesday, paired with Clemson and Arkansas.
