LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team plated eight runs on 15 hits and made a late push by loading the bases in the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback against No. 7 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon, falling 11-8 to the Sun Devils.

The loss drops USC to 12-18 on the year and 5-7 in Pac-12 play, while ASU improves to 26-4 overall, 9-3 Pac-12.

The Trojans were down by as many as eight runs in the game, falling behind 11-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but chipped away and made things interesting down the stretch. Clay Owens singled home two runs in the fifth and would later hit his first career home run in the seventh to make it an 11-7 game.

Owens later led the bottom of the ninth off with a single and came around to score on a bases-loaded walk to make it a three-run game. Matthew Acosta had a chance with the bases loaded and two outs, scalding a sinking liner to right field, but it was caught on the dive by ASU's Carter Aldrete to end the game.

The Sun Devils broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning and then followed that up with a four-run fifth to put things just out of reach.

The Trojans' 15 hits in the game matched a season high. USC still took two of three games on the weekend, giving the Trojans their first series win over a Top 10 team since 2015.

TOP PERFORMERS

Clay Owens went 3-for-5 at the plate, with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.
Jamal O'Guinn was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI on the day.
Brady Shockey was one of three Trojans with a three-hit day, going 3-for-5 with a double and two singles.
CJ Stubbs hit his fourth homer of the year in the first inning, tying him for the team lead.

COMING UP
The Trojans welcome Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. USC then heads to Utah for another Pac-12 series starting on Thursday.
