No. 4 Pepperdine Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 5 USC To Win MPSF Tourney and Qualify For NCAA Championship; Trojans In Running For At-Large NCAA Bid
April 20, 2019 | Men's Volleyball, Features
David Wieczorek had 18 kill, 7 digs and 2 aces to lead the No. 4-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-20, 27-25 sweep over No. 5 USC in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament championship match on Saturday (April 20) in Malibu, earning the Waves an automatic bid into the upcoming 7-team NCAA Championship.
It was Pepperdine's fifth MPSF Tournament title, but its first since 2008. The Waves, who also won the 20199 MPSF regular season title, will be making their 16th NCAA appearance, where they have won 5 crowns. Pepperdine improved to 22-6 overall in 2019.
USC fell to 18-10 overall and has won just 1 of 10 road matches in 2019. It was Troy's third MPSF Tournament runner-up finish since the tourney began in 1993.
The Trojans will be in the running for 1 of 2 at-large bids into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA bracket will be announced Sunday (April 21) morning. USC has appeared in 14 NCAAs, winning 4 titles.
Pepperdine hit .410 in the match to USC's .233. The Waves had more blocks (8.5 to 3.0), while the Trojans served more aces (6 to 4).
Jack Wyett led USC with 13 kills, while Gianluca Grasso added 10 kills, Ryan Moss had 9 kills and 8 digs and Chris Hall had 9 digs. Wyett and Hall made the All-Tournament team for the Trojans.
Wieczorek hit .571 for the Waves, while teammate Michael Wexter had 10 kills and 4 blocks, Kaleb Denmark added 8 kills and 7 digs and Spencer Wickens had 7 digs.
USC led throughout the first half of the opening set, including at 10-6, but Pepperdine scored 6 out of 7 points to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 17-16 lead and the Trojans could never recapture the lead as the Waves hit .538 (USC served 4 aces in the set). Pepperdine scored the first 3 points of the second set and quickly extended the margin to 6-1, and the Trojans could never recover as the Waves put up 4 blocks in the set. The third set seesawed until Pepperdine went on a 3-point run to build a 16-13 lead, but USC then went on its own 3-0 run to tie it at 23-23 before the Waves tallied the final 2 points in extra time.
Should USC get selected into the NCAA Championship field, there will be a play-in match on April 25, with teams and site to be determined. Two more NCAA play-in matches will be held April 28 at The Pyramid at Long Beach State, with the NCAA Championship semifinals there on May 2 followed by the final on May 4.
